Football + Books

Posted September 20, 2015 / Personal / Information / Etc. / 11 Comments

It’s not a secret that I love football too much. I will stay up until midnight on a weeknight, watching a game that doesn’t even involve my own team, even if I’m sick and should get 8 hours of sleep. Yes, that has already happened this season. “I went to bed and didn’t catch the end” doesn’t cut it for me. I’ve been trying to think of a way to incorporate a little football into my blog this year, and thought this tag-style post would be a good start.

football bookWARNING: This tag is not for the casual football fan! Only die-hards will probably have strong enough feelings about each team to participate 😉

THE RULES:  Sort the 32 football teams into the categories listed below based on the feelings that the teams give you. Each category has a certain number of slots available for teams. Pair a book with each team based on which book relates closest to the matching bookish category. Don’t use any team more than once!!

* There is a plain text version of the categories and graphics at the bottom of the post! You can copy and paste that section for easier use, if you choose to participate.

PICK ONE TEAM & BOOK

THIS IS MY TEAM. I love them more than anything and don’t care if the obsession is unhealthy. | Favorite book of all timefave

MY ONE TRUE LOVEEEEE, the Panthers! I’m very happy to see the Panthers sitting next to Anna and the French Kiss. It’s hard to pick an all-time favorite book (and obviously Harry Potter really gets that spot) but this is one I just absolutely love.

I hate this team with every fiber of my being. When they lose, I feel like I’ve won. | Book with a low rating and/or enraged you while readinghate

Being someone in New England means you either love the Patriots an insane amount, hate them with every ounce of your body… or don’t care about football. It’s a pretty polarizing team, but it’s even crazier if you live in the area. After the Panthers lost to the Patriots in the Superbowl, kids at school were brutal to me the next day. Living in this area and not liking the Pats can make social media unbearable when they’re playing (win or lose). The vast majority of people I know who are Patriots fans are the most obnoxious people in the world. (Every book blogger I know that likes the Patriots is significantly nicer and better than those idiots in my personal life.) I could go on all day about how much I despise them, but I’ll refrain. I paired the Pats with September Girls because this book infuriated me.

A lot of people I know love this team, but I’m not one of them. | Hyped book that didn’t work for youeveryone loves not me

There are plenty of people in my area that also like the Giants. I don’t mind them too much, but their fans can be just as annoying. I was a makeshift Giants fan during the Superbowls though 🙂 I tend to be biased towards the Cowboys because they’re my mom’s team, so some of her Giants-hate can rub off on me. Fangirl is a book that sadly didn’t work for me, even though lots of other people are pretty obsessed with it. Sadface.

I don’t personally know a single person who roots for this team. (Do they have fans??) | Underrated book you lovedunderrated

There are probably plenty of teams I could include here because most people around me like the Patriots or a few other teams. I think the Cardinals are a team where I literally can’t even think of any fan that I know of. Aspen was a fantastic underrated book that I think everyone should read. LOVED it so much.

I HATE how good this team is and I really need them to suck a bit more. | Book that pleasantly surprised youtoo good

One of my best friends likes the Seahawks. Fun fact: she only picked them because they had beat my other friend’s team and my team that season. She wanted to be a pain in our ass. Aaaand two seasons later, they won the Superbowl. They’ve been predicted to go to the Superbowl (and have) a lot over the past few seasons. I’m ready for another NFC team to rise to the challenge! *cough* The One Thing was a completely fantastic book (and the author is such a sweetheart!) that took me by surprise. I signed up for the ARC Tour on a whim and am so glad I did.

I’d give anything for one of this team’s players to join my team. | Favorite supporting characters or friend group in a bookplayers

JJ Watt is a beast and you’d have to be an idiot not to want him on your team. Like, seriously. He’s such a huge teddy bear off the field too! I totally love him. In My Life Next Door, the Garretts stole my heart. I absolutely loved their huge family and what they added to the book – especially George. Sam didn’t have a lot of good friends or family relationships, but the Garretts brought her in like one of their own.

If I had to get rid of my team’s quarterback, I’d take the quarterback from this team in his place. | Favorite main characterqb

Aaron Rodgers is my favorite non-Panthers player, I think. I love how insanely talented he is, but also how humble he is about it. Lots of players could learn from him! I do have a tendency of rooting for the Packers when they’re not playing for the Panthers too. Maybe In Another Life is probably the best book I’ve read this year. I related so much to Hannah in a lot of ways. She’s probably my most recent favorite character.

This team has one of the HOTTEST players in the NFL. *fans self* | Book boyfriendbook bf

I’ve been creeping on Jordan Cameron for quite some time. He was previously on the Browns but he’s now on the Dolphins. Of course, I can’t pick my own team for this one (Cam Newton is hotter than anyone else in the NFL, don’t argue)… so he wins. My ultimate book boyfriend is the incomparable Matt Finch from Open Road Summer. I don’t usually like when people sing for me (or anywhere near me…), but I would totally let him serenade me. He’s got the banter down, too. Move over Reagan.

DIVISION RIVAL TEAMS & BOOKS

These three teams are my division rivals. | Sports-related books you’ve readdivision

I am definitely someone that believes you must hate your division rivals in order to be a real football fan. Only one of you can make it to the Superbowl AND you play each other twice a year, so you better have a good rivalry going. I’m not a fan of these teams, but I AM a fan of these sports-related books. (See what I did there?) All Lined Up (football), Play On (baseball), and Catching Jordan (football) are excellent reads centered around sports.

PICK A COUPLE TEAMS & BOOKS

*If you have a lot of teams under the more negative categories, you don’t have to feature a large amount of books… just in case you don’t want to spread the negative around too much 😉

If I was forced to choose teams to root for instead of my own, it would probably be one of these. | Books containing ships you will go down withroot

Because I’m an excellent daughter, I heavily assist my parents in rooting for their teams. My dad likes the Raiders and my mom likes the Cowboys. If they’re not playing the Panthers, I will root my butt off for them. When I was four and picked the Panthers, I did it just to avoid having to choose a side between my parents and their teams. The Start of Me and You and Since You’ve Been Gone have two fantastic ships (and book boyfriends). I’d support those couples no matter what… except if I had a chance with one of those boys.

Because of that ONE terrible game I’ll never forget, these teams are stuck in my head forever. *shakes fist* | Books with endings you didn’t see comingbad game

I also had the Bengals here originally, from that STUPID tie game from last season. God, that pissed me off. Ties should just not exist in the NFL. Anyways, I will always hate the 49ers because the Panthers lost to them in the playoffs a few years ago. It was a great season that the Panthers deserved to go much farther in 🙁  Also, Colin Kaepernick is a weenie. For an ending I didn’t see coming (like that stupid game), I had to go with a classic: Gone Girl.

If I had to choose a team based on their colors, logo, or uniform, I’d choose these beauties. | Covers you lovecovers

I loooove animal print in general, so I had to include these teams. I like the Jaguars colors and logo a lot. The Bengals have an insanely cool stadium as well as jerseys and helmets. Huge fan of them both, aesthetically at least! I chose To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Reign of Shadows because they’re both insanely awesome book covers.

I generally like these teams and will root for them (unless they’re playing mine, of course). | Books you’d recommendyes

These teams haven’t done anything to piss me off, really. I kind of like them. Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning are easily two of my favorite quarterbacks out there, so I don’t mind rooting for them. I like to root for the Ravens because I’m still mourning the loss of Steve Smith to them; I want him to be happy and successful. Aaand the Browns. I don’t know, I just feel bad for them. Some books I’d recommend overall? I loved Dissonance (and its follow-up book and novella!) and Pivot Point (and its sequel!). Oddly both of these books have a paranormal/sci-fi vibe to them… which I usually don’t even read too much.

I generally dislike these teams and am pretty happy when they lose. | Books you weren’t a fan of or were disappointed by no

Whoops, that list got out of hand. Most of these teams are just my parents’ biases being ingrained in my head (Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles). I’m not a fan of the Steelers because my grandfather liked them and would be a butt when watching the games 😛  Some books that ended up disappointing me a lot include Even in Paradise, The Boy Most Likely To, and We Were Liars.

I don’t care either way about these teams. *yawn* | Books that were middle-of-the-road MEH for youmeh

These teams are pretty damn harmless. They don’t bother me either way, for the most part. It’s hard to pick teams and books you didn’t care about too much… but three books that were MEH for me include The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, Between the Lines, and If I Stay. I think most of them just didn’t live up to my expectations and ended up with 3.5 stars apiece.

Here are plain team graphics and category list for you to fill in and use. I made the graphics myself and it was really time-consuming, so credit me please! 🙂

No! The Seahawks should always be on top! 😉 I guess I am a little biased since they are my hometown team and all, but I still will root for them.

  2. Anne

I might have to do this! We also pretty much dislike the same teams, except I am a Patriots fan (they are just fun to watch!). And I’m from Wisconsin and don’t really care for the Packers. I’m just a black sheep from my state.
