Ten Debut Authors and their Sophomore Novels
Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review.
This week’s TTT is about debut authors and their sophomore novels, which can be taken in two directions: debut authors that have me itching for their sophomore novel, or debut authors whose second book didn’t disappoint. I ended up only thinking of one real solid example for the second category, so I couldn’t resist including it. Otherwise, here I have eight debut authors’ books I LOVED and need their second book ASAP.
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon | The One Thing by Marci Lyn Curtis | First & Then by Emma Mills | Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli | We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach | All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven | The Falconer by Elizabeth May
Some of these may count as second novels if the author already had a self-pubbed book or something along those lines, but they’re all YA debuts in general! Loved (or at least strongly liked) all of these above and really looking forward to either the second book in the series or by the author.Emery Lord’s debut Open Road Summer and sophomore novel The Start of Me and You were both fantastic. I loved the second book a bit more (which is funny, because she actually wrote that one first! Either way, I’m so excited for literally anything she writes… especially her upcoming one!
Great list!! I have three of the same. I also really want to read All the Bright Places, First & Then and both Emery Lord books.
Thank you! Yesss they’re all wonderful books!
I’m excited about The Start of Me and You! So glad you loved it! Happy reading! 🙂
Thank you!
I totally guessed that you were going to pick Emery as an example of an author whose sophomore novel was just as good as, if not better, than her debut! I really, really, really loved THE START OF ME AND YOU. It was fantastic, and an excellent follow-up to the already awesome OPEN ROAD SUMMER!
YES SO SO GOOD!
Red Queen. Yes! I want the second book now. 🙂 I’ll be reading Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda soon, so I’m glad it made your list. You have a lot of others I want to get to. 🙂
Hope you enjoy it!
Great list. You have a few books on here that I have read and enjoyed myself. I think I am also going to have to add a few of these to my Christmas wishlist, it looks like I have missed out on some great debuts recently. I am especially excited to read Simon VS the Homo Sapiens Agenda, I have heard so many good things about that one. Here’s my TTT.
Hope you enjoy!
That Emery Lord mention definitely made this list EVEN MORE AWESOME. I cannot wait for her third book -I am so freaking excited.
ME TOO
This is the second time I’ve seen Nicola Yoon and Emma Mills on a list! I loved Everything Everything and want to read First & Then. I can’t wait to read whatever Jennifer Niven writes next, as well as Becky Albertalli, though I never ended up finishing Simon.
I LOOOVED FIRST AND THEN. so cute.
Hi! Most of these are on my TBR list. I really need to get going on this 🙂
