Series to Continue… or Quit

I’m not too bad about reading series as they’re released. Usually I’m excited about the next, upcoming book, and am able to read it ASAP. I’ve had issues with binging series lately even though I used to LOVE it. I wanted to take a look at some of the series I still need to finish up. Most of these are all fully published and I really just need to decide if it’s worth it to keep reading. Let me know your thoughts!

The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy, #1) Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) Trial by Fire (The Worldwalker Trilogy, #1) Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)

The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas
Read: The Burning Sky • Number of books left to read: 2

Why I can’t decide: I did enjoy the first book (including the ship!) but I have not felt the NEED to read the next book(s) yet. I’m not sure why. I can’t figure out if I would like these better reading instead of audio, because the audio was good, but it just didn’t keep me as engaged as I’d hoped.

Hex Hall series by Rachel Hawkins
Read: Hex Hall • Number of books left to read: 3

Why I can’t decide: Again, I did like the first book. I even started the second one and then put it aside for a little bit. I’m intrigued to see what will happen next but clearly not interested enough to keep going in binge form. This would be a good one to just roll from one to the next, because the first one was quick, but still.

Worldwalker series by Rachel Hawkins
Read: Trial By Fire • Number of books left to read: 2.5

Why I haven’t read it yet: I actually know I will finish this one but for some reason haven’t taken the plunge yet. I even have the second book waiting around to be read. I think part of it was seeing that the ROWAN ebook was misleading. I would probably reread book one first, or find a good recap.

Red Queen series by Rachel Hawkins
Read: Red Queen • Number of books left to read: 2+

Why I can’t decide: Yeahhh so I always figured I would read and love this series, since the author is a friend of a friend… but I just have not cared AT ALL. I was intrigued when I finished book one, DNFed one novella, and was bored my another. I haven’t seen amazing things about other books so meh. We’ll see.

The Selection (The Selection, #1) The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) Ruby Red (Precious Stone Trilogy, #1)

The Selection series by Kiera Cass
Read: The Selection, Elite, One • Number of books left to read: 3

Why I can’t decide: I DNFed the most recent book in this series I was trying to read, and still have a few more to go. I just couldn’t bring myself to give a shit at all. I think I could possibly come back at some point, I guess, but I really barely liked the original series. The daughter isn’t much better.

The Maze Runner series by James Dashner
Read: Maze Runner, Scorch Trials, Death Cure • Number of books left to read: 2

Why I can’t decide: I only have some prequels and novellas left to read. I was pretty bored of this series by the time I finished the final book, so I haven’t thought about picking up the others. I most likely won’t finish this one, but you really never know. Maybe if they make movies for those books too?

Starbound series by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Read: These Broken Stars • Number of books left to read: 2

Why I haven’t read it yet: Pretty positive I’ll finish this companion series because I really liked the first book. I attempted the second one via audio but DNFed because I kept getting sidetracked. I only listened to like 10 minutes so I know I should give it more of a shot than that. Someday I will binge the other two!

Precious Stone trilogy by Kerstin Gier
Read: Ruby Red • Number of books left to read: 2

Why I haven’t read it yet: I’m actually pretty excited to finish this series off! I loved the first book and time travel in general. I’ll have to read a recap for the first book since I read it so long ago. I was doing the series read with someone and then ended up pausing that, so I haven’t picked up the rest quite yet.

  1. I recommend leaving The Selection at the main 3 books. I wish I did. I found the first half to be book crack and the other ones to just be extra and not needed.

  2. I’m quitting the Red Queen series. The first book was ok, but I really didn’t like the second book and won’t read the third. I loved the original Selection series, so I would recommend those. I started the newer books with the daughter, but couldn’t really get into it. I actually loved These Broken Stars, but I don’t know if I’ll continue the series. I didn’t realize it was a series when I started it, and I felt it was a good stand-alone book.

  3. I’m so bad at carry on book series, but I have read the hex hall series and I think I enjoyed it. It was such a long time that I barely remember but I don’t recall having bad feelings towards it!

  4. I vote that yes, you must finish The Elemental Trilogy! The 2nd book is my favorite in that series. I wasn’t very pleased with the way Hex Hall ended, tbh, but it was a decent series overall. And I quit Red Queen even though I did really like the first book. The series is turning out to be too long!

  5. I have so many unfinished series that I had to create a shelf on GR to keep track. I’m so glad you want to finish Starbound! I need to finally read TFL myself.

  6. I totally feel you on this! I loved The Burning Sky too and really wanted to read the sequels and still… haven’t? But I think that might be one worth continuing. I thought the Hex Hall books got progressively meh unfortunately :/ Yeah I def gave up the Selection after the original 3 books haha. Those were enough for me. I really liked Ruby Red too and never continued! You’ll have to tell me what you think 🙂

  7. I read Hex Hall and thought it was a lot of fun, but then I never read the others. It’s been so long that I probably won’t continue them at this point. =/ I DNFed Red Queen and never read past The Selection in that series. I’m so bad with series!

  8. I was also SUPER mislead by the Rowan e-book too! I remember thinking it was going to be much longer/different than it was. I read an ARC of the second book in the Trial By Fire and it was really gruesome and really went in a direction I was NOT expecting. So sad because I know we both enjoyed the first one!
