Operation COYER and eBooks I Keep Forgetting

Operation COYER and eBooks I Keep Forgetting

I saw a few posts recently (Kristen and Jamie) about ebooks people forgot they owned. This happens to me ALL the time – I buy a book I’m excited to read (or even one I’m not as excited to read but hello Kindle sale) and then I completely forget about it until I’m scrolling through my Kindle, looking for my next read. I actually don’t do this super often because if I open up my Kindle, I have a book in mind. The other night before bed though, I did find myself flipping through and trying to see what I was in the mood for. I found so many gems that are just waiting to be read! I’m calling this Operation COYER based on the COYER (clean out your e-reads) Challenge. I’m not an official participant but I liked the wording, so I wanted to link over there. First, I’ll share a few books that I keep forgetting I have on my Kindle. Then, I’ll talk about how I plan to clean my ereader out and be a happier person. I hate that my Kindle is so damn slooooow. Top books I keep forgetting about            Me, You, and Tiramisu by Charlotte Butterfield | I loved another one of this author’s books and immediately downloaded this other book because it was cheaper. These characters were minimally introduced in CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE and I love the whole bookstore idea. I wanted to read it soonafter but I’m bad […]

Degrees of Separation and Connections

Degrees of Separation and Connections

I’ve talked repeatedly on here about how I love books where random people come together over a shared event or traumatic experience – people who would otherwise never have met each other. Movies like Valentine’s Day, Love the Coopers, and New Years Eve always interested me too, where interconnected stories play out slowly throughout the movie and you wonder how the people you’ve met will end up knowing each other. There are a lot of topics that fall under this kind of “connection” category, like people meeting up during trips (traveling around the world, road tripping, etc.), being snowed in or stuck somewhere with someone, health-related connections (through organ donation, being in a hospital, etc.), working together for the summer or at a first job, or even being connected over time (where some of the story happens in the past and some happens in present day, but the characters’ stories are related). There are A LOT of flavors to this category that I love so much, but one thing remains true: these people would not know each other if it weren’t for the weird, extenuating circumstance that ends up binding them together.    In my recent read-bait post, I talked about “travel meet cutes.” This is the kind of situation where someone meets a ~special person~ during their travels (road trip, airport, stuck on a train – the list goes on) and fall in love. I’ll talk about those books here a little, but I wanted to also expand into those […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #169: Old TBR

Books from Way Back on my Goodreads TBR that I STILL Haven’t Read Somehow Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I’m sure I’ve discussed this a few times in the past, but it’s always good to come back and remind myself! I think about the books I couldn’t wait for and HAD to buy but didn’t read right away ALL THE TIME. I’m not including purchased books because I have definitely purged a lot recently; I’ll just be using my Goodreads TBR today. I started my Goodreads account in 2010, so some of the earliest books are from back then.          The Secret by Rhonda Byrne | Added to Goodreads: September 2010 My friend’s mom told me about this book back in the day and if I’m being honest, I think it’s the reason I even made a Goodreads account?? I remember that I didn’t want to forget the title so I was looking up book tracking sites, and Goodreads popped up. It’s the first book I ever added to my TBR on there. I own a copy, I think, but I haven’t read the whole thing. Perfect Mistake & Ominous by Kate Brian | Added to Goodreads: September 2010 Kate […]

Seasonal Book Club (Part Two)

Seasonal Book Club (Part Two)

I wrote a TTT a while back where I created a book club that read specific books based on the season or month. I thought it’d be a fun post to revisit now with newer books! I also wanted to add in more details, like the setting for the book club meeting and/or if there’s a specific theme to the month that can go beyond the story itself. I haven’t read any of these books yet because this is my fictional book club where I’m reading everything for the first time with my friends! I also thought it would be fun to do this in December because who knows – maybe I can use some of these as inspiration for my real-life book club in 2018? 😉 Monthly theme: “New Year, New Beginning” Book: People Like Us by Donna Mele Location or activity: Trying a new restaurant for the meeting I wanted to focus on the New Years aspect without actually reading a book about the holiday. I chose PEOPLE LIKE US because it’s about a girl who reinvents herself at a new school in order to cover up some secrets of her past. I love books set at prep schools, plus the murder mystery element. (Let’s pretend this book comes out in January instead of February, okay?) I think this would be a fun way to kick off the year by thinking of reinvention and how it doesn’t always work. For the meeting location, we’d keep it simple by […]

February TBR

My monthly TBR feature here shows my progress based on last month’s TBR, my plans for this month, and anything else I might be thinking about from a reading perspective. Sometimes I feature a little poll at the bottom so you guys can help me figure out a certain title I should read from a group of books. January Progress         GUYS THIS IS UNPRECEDENTED – for the first time ever, I read every single book on my TBR list from the previous month! I can’t believe it. So yes, I managed to read seven books out of the seven I picked out for January. I started the Hope’s Crossing series with BLACKBERRY SUMMER, read all three of my January egalleys, started my reading year with FOOLISH HEARTS, and read other books I’d been meaning to get to. I’m going to pat myself on the back all month. I also read a handful of books I picked out from my winter bingo TBR ideas! So that’s another two books, plus some of the ones up here that double-counted. YES. On Deck for February Finishing Bingo      Black author: Dear Martin by Nic Stone Science fiction: Wires and Nerve by Marissa Meyer Buddy read: TBD if Cristina and I do Book Buddies 2018 debut: Nice Try, Jane Sinner by Lianne Oelke Music themes: Noteworthy by Riley Redgate Library Books   Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire Book from my library holds list on the left, if something comes in! I picked up DATSAB the other […]

Potential 2018 Rereads

Potential 2018 Rereads

I don’t do as much rereading as I could, should, or want to. I always tell myself I don’t have enough time with all of the other NEW books out there. However, the best kinds of rereads that sort of take away from this issue are (a) audio rereads because it’s like bonus reading time anyways and (b) rereads of books I read for the first time a VERY long time ago, so it’s like I’m reading it again for the first time. I’ve had success with some nostalgic series in the past. I hope to reread some more recent releases this year though, because lots of books have sequels coming out and I decided I wanted to be prepared! MY LADY JANE by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows Reason: It was SO good and I got the audiobook on sale recently; companion story coming out soon Format: Like I said, I got the audiobook on sale after Black Friday! When: Probably sometime close to the release of the new book? They’re not an actual series so I don’t HAVE to do it this way, but I’m guessing I’ll read it sometime around April. I realistically could hold off on rereading this because I don’t have a NEED, but I may as well let myself have some fun 🙂 CARAVAL by Stephanie Garber Reason: I don’t remember much from my first read of the book (what else is new though?) and I preordered the second book in the series. I remember there […]

Low Rated Books I Loved

Low Rated Books I Loved

I’m really feelin’ the inspiration that people are getting from Booktube for blog posts! I’ve been noticing this a lot lately and it’s created some fun posts for sure. The latest one I’ve loved is from Madalyn, who got the inspiration from BooksAndLala’s video. It’s about some low rated books (on Goodreads, sorted by overall rating) that we loved. This is the ever elusive “positive black sheep” opinion. Everyone hated it but I loved it.    Anne & Henry by Dawn Ius Goodreads average rating: 3.06 stars | My rating: 4 stars I can’t put my finger on why I enjoyed this so much, but I did. I think it was an interesting retelling of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, but I think people who don’t know too much about their story may like it more. I saw a lot of mixed reviews from people with more knowledge of their situation. I talked in my review about how Henry was really lame; I could see why he liked Anne but not the other way around. Ask Me How I Got Here by Christine Heppermann Goodreads average rating: 3.19 stars | My rating: 4 stars I suppose I can see why this would be hit-or-miss. I don’t love books in poetry or verse (or even books of straight-up poems, usually), but I enjoyed both works by Heppermann. This story was powerful while still being a very quick read for me. The topic is very heavy and I guess wouldn’t be […]

January TBR + Winter Bingo

January TBR + Winter Bingo

I recently started a monthly TBR feature, where I try to pin down which books I plan to read in the upcoming month. It also helps remind me throughout the month which books I’m supposed to be reading, for various reasons. I add a little poll at the bottom too, so you guys can vote and help me narrow down some of my options as well. Here are my top TBR choices for this month and how I did last month… December Progress       My main goals for December were to read holiday books, finish my Flights of Fantasy challenge, and finish my Goodreads challenge. I have successfully done all three! I managed to read four of the Christmassy books I put in my December TBR, skipped one, and read two others. I also killed two birds with one stone by reading a fantasy/holiday combo book of novellas. On Deck for January 2017 Leftovers & Borrowed books    Top Ten by Katie Cotugno // A Taxonomy of Love by Rachael Allen Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills  TOP TEN has been hanging around ever since my library hold came in sometime during December. I really love Cotugno’s books and can’t wait to see what her latest is like! I borrowed A TAXONOMY OF LOVE from Madalyn way too long ago and keep saying I’m going to read it. My first ~resolution~ is to read it ASAP. I need to be better about these things. And finally, FOOLISH HEARTS was only released […]

Unreleased Book Cover Love

Unreleased Book Cover Love

It’s no secret that one of my favorite features is Cover Snark at A Reader of Fictions. I usually add 90% of my unreleased books to my TBR from these posts. I don’t want to take a page out of her book here (weird sort-of pun?) but I did want to share some recent book covers I’ve seen that I added to my “cover love” shelf. You’ve seen this post on my blog in one way or another for years, because you know how I feel about covers, but here are some unreleased books with covers I am looovin. Covers I Already Love See all the books here. Covers I Can’t Wait to See I always keep some books on my “jazzed up for this” shelf so I can remember which synopses really grabbed me. There are quite a few books on this shelf in any given moment, so I wanted to check out which books I can’t WAIT to see covers for! Here are a few… Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett Synopsis: Simon Pulse has bought a YA title by Jenn Bennett. In Serious Moonlight, a mystery aficionado spends the summer before college knee-deep in both intrigue and a romance with her charismatic co-worker while working the night shift in a Seattle hotel. The book is scheduled for 2019. Why I’m excited: I love Jenn Bennet in general and this book sounds so good! I’ve enjoyed her other covers for the most part and think they usually fit the book pretty […]

Recent Read-Bait: Wishes and Travel Meet Cutes

Recent Read-Bait: Wishes and Travel Meet Cutes

You may remember my read-bait series from a long time ago, where I talked about certain keywords, phrases, and tropes that call my name. I planned to keep going with these posts because there are many, many topics that suck me right in. My recent posts discussed reunions, memory loss, and boarding school, then fake dating, bucket lists, and family drama, then carnivals, disappearances, and rich people/winning the lottery. Here I am today to talk about recent words that have grabbed me… This post is just about two read-bait topics for once, primarily because I was eager to post another one of these. The first topic is about “wishes” in some way, shape, or form. I love books involving wishes being granted or people being able to grant wishes for other people. I read Down with the Shine by Kate Karyus Quinn last year and was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved it. This book involved magical moonshine that grants wishes for the people who drink it, so the main character had to track everyone down to reverse them. The concept was an incredibly unique take on the wish topic and led me to add so many others to my TBR. Next, one of my favorite tropes in books is when people meet while traveling (especially internationally, since ya girl doesn’t even have a passport yet…). Books like Wanderlost by Jen Malone and Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson got me thinking about characters encountering “travel-related meet cutes” with the love interest. […]
