October TBR List

I’m pretty bad at sticking to my TBR list – even when I specifically put the books in order on my “To Read First” shelf. I tried my best to organize by what I want to read, since I don’t have a lot of books right now with deadlines that need to be read. (Although that could change, of course.) Here’s my somewhat flexible TBR list for October. These are the top 30 books I plan on reading or will be reading in October! * Those of you who have read the Throne of Glass series — would you recommend reading the Assasin’s Blade book of novellas first?? I’ve heard mixed thoughts on this!

What are your top three book hates? Folding down page corners / dog-earring Folding the book in half so the cover gets all bent (I wish I had a dollar for every time I scolded friends who did this to MY books I lent them) People who shame others for reading YA when you’re not technically in the “age group” — read what makes you happy!! Describe your perfect reading spot. I’ve shared my 10 favorite places to read in the past, but I think my overall ideal reading location would be somewhere outside in the shade with lots of pillows and blankets, a perfect temperature outside, with a coffee (or a margarita! or a beer!) next to me. Tell us three book confessions. I hate cover reveal posts on blogs. I’m sorry! I’m just sick of seeing the same cover over and over again. If you post more promotional things than reviews, I just don’t see the point.. If it’s your most anticipated read of the coming year and you’re excited about the cover, that’s perfect, but otherwise I’ll skip right by that in my feed. I think I’m starting to prefer my Kindle to real books. I know, I know. I really do love the feeling of holding a REAL book in my hands, but it’s so much easier to hold a Kindle. Plus I can read in the dark! I went through a book dry spell for quite a few years. College was just not conducive to […]

Random Bookish Thoughts: Blogging Schedule

Random Bookish Thoughts: Blogging Schedule

Today’s Topic: Blogging Schedules! Random Bookish Thoughts, a “meme” that (ironically, based on today’s topic) has no real scheduled posting day. Any time I think of a random bookish topic, I’ll share my thoughts on it. You’re encouraged to join me in the comments if you have any thoughts, too! Do you have a blogging schedule, or do you post whatever, whenever? What’s your schedule look like if you have one? How often to you post reviews vs. memes/other topics? I started this blog without any intention of creating a schedule for myself. I joined in on a weekly meme for each day of the week (aside from weekends) because I wasn’t sure what to post. You’ve heard my thoughts on weekly memes before. I like them – I think they can help inspire you to post when you normally may not cover that topic or even write on your blog for the day. Everyone’s responses are different and interesting; it brings people together. Aside from those memes, I posted reviews whenever I happened to write them; I posted other recommendation lists whenever I was inspired to. Now that I’m entering the third month with my blog, I have definitely created a blogging schedule that I (mostly) follow. I like to post every day on here, even if it’s just the daily meme or a recommendation list.

The TBR Tag

I found this over at Bibliophile Bliss – I wasn’t tagged, but she “tagged” anyone who wanted to participate. It’s a series of questions about your TBR (or “To Be Read”) list … Here goes! 1. How do you keep track of your TBR pile? Goodreads! I think this is a fairly standard answer from a book blogging perspective. My TBR shelf is a huge mess that has no form of organization unfortunately… but it’s the only way I can keep all of the books I want to read in one spot! I also use Amazon somewhat; any book I know I’ll be reading/buying soon will go on my Wish List so I can grab it easily. 2. Is your TBR mostly print or ebook? I definitely have more print books on my TBR shelves that are waiting to be read. Don’t get me wrong – I still have PLENTY of Kindle books to read. I even have some that are on my old Kindle. My actual TBR list on Goodreads doesn’t have specific editions added; I just add the first edition that comes up in a search. 3. How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next? A lot of factors, actually! The biggest factor is what my mood is at the moment I finish my previous book. At the end of August I was majorly in the mood for summery contemporary romances…so I filled my whole September TBR List with swoon-worthy books like that. (Now, after […]

This Post is Brought to You by the Letter R

I was given the letter R by The Broke and The Bookish! For your letter, you share your favorite book, author, song, film, and thing that start with that letter. Interested in participating in this book tag? Comment on this post and I’ll give you a letter! BOOK Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella Apparently 8 out of the 10 “R” books I’ve read are located in the middle of a book series. So, here’s my favorite standalone book! This is a chick-lit book, which I don’t read too often, but I love Sophie Kinsella. This was a cute story about a girl waking up and suffering from amnesia. She doesn’t remember the last three years, which includes her multimillionaire husband and the new life she is leading. I honestly don’t remember too much plot-wise about this book, but I just know it put a smile on my face (as her books normally do!) AUTHOR J.K. Rowling DUH! Do I really even need to explain this one? I actually did try to find an alternative author, just because I’ve really only read the Harry Potter books by her, but she’s pretty much the only option. Can’t say I’m surprised. I like Rainbow Rowell too, but I’ve only read one of hers so far. SONG Okay I have a hard time with narrowing down music because my tastes are so eclectic. Here are my top five. “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin, because no artist will EVER compare to them. “Ransom” by Drake, […]

Mid-Year Book Freakout

Mid-Year Book Freakout: a survey of the books I’ve read so far this year! Originally posted on A Book So Fathomless // Found on The Reading Shelf Best book you’ve read so far in 2014: Aspen by Rebekah Crane I’ve been talking about Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver quite a bit this year, but I think my new favorite is Aspen. Read this one if you’re prepared to laugh out loud and fall in love with every character in the book! (Review) Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2014: Hereafter by Kate Brian It’s no secret that the Shadowlands trilogy by Kate Brian completely knocked my socks off. I read all three books within a 2-3 day period and forced two people I know to immediately start them as well. Hereafter was a really cool second book, but unfortunately the plot is almost 100% a spoiler if you haven’t read the first book yet! (Review for all books) New release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Dissonance by Erica O’Rourke Okay I’ve built this book up so much in my head, I really hope it doesn’t disappoint. I still have a shit-ton of contemporary YA that I’ve been wanting to read since around May, but this is a more recent new release that I can’t stop thinking […]

Random Bookish Thoughts #1

Week of 7/28/14 As I blog more and more, I’m constantly thinking of little things throughout the week that I wish I could tie in somewhere into my blog. I don’t want to go crazy with too many posts, especially if it’s just one little thought that popped into my head. I’ve decided to start up a little weekly feature of my own… It’ll just be a way to put down my thoughts throughout the week and then post it every Sunday. I can’t believe I got my first advanced copy approved through NetGalley! Yes, I already posted about this but seriously I’m so happy – it’s worth mentioning again. I’ve been noticing Before I Fall on a lot of blogs lately, being recognized by both bloggers and famous authors. This book is so great; I’m really glad it’s been getting praise! If you haven’t read it yet, DO IT. (Book is by Lauren Oliver) Jesus Christ why didn’t I read Gone Girl sooner?? What a book. I’m listening to an audiobook after I told myself I wouldn’t… and I’m having the same experiences I’m having before. Maybe this deserves a post of it’s own, but I just can’t get into audiobooks. I absolutely LOVE the idea of them – “reading” wherever you go (especially while driving and getting ready in the morning), but the narrator’s voice totally affects my thoughts on the characters. I don’t know why; I just can’t separate it. I’m going to keep trying though because I […]

Blogging Reflections: On Covers

Posted July 29, 2014 / Other Memes / 10 Comments

Blogging Reflections: Thoughts on Book Covers  [Bimonthly feature from Bookshelf Reflections] I’ve been looking for an excuse to expand on this topic! You may remember I posted a top 10 list of Books I’m Judging by the Cover. I mentioned a little bit of my thoughts in that post, but now I can tell you a little bit more. Covers are really important to me; I’m not going to lie. It’s very, very hard to not judge a book by it’s cover. There are so many books out there for our consumption; there have to be explicit signals to make people decide to pick up the book and read the back cover. If a book doesn’t have an appealing cover, people are rarely going to flip it over and see the plot summary. Browsing for books on Goodreads, at Barnes & Noble, or on review sites, covers that catch my eye are the ones I’ll most likely purchase. I really enjoy graphic covers with beautiful typography, or some of the new contemporary YA covers with typography placed over pictures. I think covers should match the book’s plot – that goes without saying. Some covers (especially fantasy ones) can be a little cheesy and cheap… If it looks like the author, with no graphic design skills, threw it together in Paint on their computer, I probably won’t read it. It sucks, but at least I admit I’m being superficial, right? Overall, there are certainly more to books than the covers. There […]

Seven Deadly Sins

Okay so I wasn’t tagged in this, but it looks fun anyways! (Found on Woven Magic Books) Greed – What is your most inexpensive book? The cheapest books I’ve purchased would be The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion (haven’t read it yet) and Class of ’98 by A.L. Player (LOVED it). Both were $2.01 on my Kindle. Those are the cheapest over the past year, but I have gotten some for free or for 99 cents on my Kindle in 2013. Wrath – What author do you have a love/hate relationship with? This is a tough one! Normally I either love or hate an author. There haven’t been a lot of instances where I dislike some of their books and like some others. I guess I would have to say Nicholas Sparks because his books feed into the super-romantic stereotype that is very unrealistic. I don’t like what they imply about romance at times, but I also have enjoyed many of his books. I am a sucker for The Notebook but wish I wasn’t! Gluttony – What book have you devoured over and over with no shame? Honestly, none. I don’t typically like to re-read books. I WILL re-read Harry Potter at some point. In the meantime, I can say I have never read a book more than once. In my opinion, there are too many books out there and I don’t want to waste time I could spend on a new book. Sloth -What book have you neglected reading due to laziness? I […]
