Top Ten Tuesdays #236: No Redesigning

Books That I Refuse to Let Anyone Touch Redesign the Covers Of Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I am actually not a big book collector. I rarely buy physical books and there are SO few that I own multiple copies of. I don’t even have special editions of books, really. The idea that I would have books that no one is allowed to touch is weird for me, so I made my own spin on this topic – here are the books with some of my all-time favorite covers that better not ever change. No one is allowed to redesign these, okay??? To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han | I know these may get some redesigns because of the movies, which isn’t as bad, but I LOVE these covers so incredibly much. Please make sure all other editions are published just like this, TYVM. Dumplin’ and Puddin’ by Julie Murphy | I love these so much. They’re striking, capture the book/character so well, and honestly make me want to frame them for my wall. I’ll admit I haven’t read Puddin’ yet but I will soon hopefully whooooops. All of Sandhya Menon’s books | I’m obsessed with these covers. […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #235: Page to Screen

Top Ten Tuesdays #235: Page to Screen

Page to Screen Freebie: Books I’d Love to See on Screen Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I tend to love when books are adapted for TV or movies. I’m not quite as territorial as I used to be, wanting to keep the magic of a certain book or author all to myself. It’s so exciting because I genuinely feel like adaptations as a whole are getting even better and truer to their written counterpart. A recent TTT featured a few books I read specifically BECAUSE they were getting the adaptation treatment, so it even works out for motivating me to read certain things. Today I’ll be talking about books that I’d love to see on screen in one capacity or another! TV Shows Summer series by Jenny Han | I know that love triangles are maybe a litttttle outdated for TV (??) but I still feel like this series deserves something. A TV show would be really nice. Each season could be maybe half of a book, or summer? Or just have three long seasons, one for each summer, with a break in between? I just want to live at Cousins Beach and see it on my screen! Belly grows […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #234: Characters Like Me

Top Ten Tuesdays #234: Characters Like Me

Characters that Remind Me of Myself Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I always try to find ways to relate to the main characters I read about in my books. I think it makes the reading experience a lot more fulfilling when there’s just one tiny thing that connects you with someone – either what they’re going through, their relationship with their families, their inside jokes with their friends, their fashion sense… I don’t have to fully relate to character experiences to relate to the characters themselves and that can make things even more interesting. Molly // 99 Days and 9 Days & 9 Nights by Katie Cotugno I could relate to Molly. I feel like life can be so messy at times and it’s nice when books can explore all of the messed up parts; it makes me feel something different for once… I truly could relate to all of the different emotions that Molly felt and her utter confusion about what was right for her… I’ve been in so many odd romantic entanglements in my life; it was nice to read a story of someone who doesn’t have perfect feelings about one person, but mixed feelings on a couple of people. I […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #233: Quotes

Inspirational/Thought-Provoking Book Quotes Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I have been utterly terrible about recording book quotes in the last couple of years. It’s something I used to pay so much attention to! For whatever reason, I just can’t bring myself to care anymore??? There aren’t a lot of new ones here but I’m going to sort by my “recently added” on Goodreads! I made these in the app Word Swag, FYI. Toil and Trouble story by Elizabeth May Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid Heartless by Marissa Meyer The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Top Ten Tuesdays #232: First Reviews

First 10 Books I Reviewed Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I never reviewed books anywhere but on my blog, honestly, even though I had Goodreads for a few years beforehand! I would definitely RATE my books on there but didn’t leave reviews. Thus, the first 10 books ever reviewed happened right here on Bookmark Lit back in 2014. With my blogiversary coming up later this year, it’s fun to look back at the beginning! 1. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – July 16, 2014 “Well, I decided to make my first review about a book I didn’t like too much. I have mixed emotions about this book, so let me try to work through them here. I have to admit, I was extremely interested in the book based on the cover. I don’t know who is making all these cool, graphic book covers lately, but I love them. I was fascinated by the small amount of plot-related information that was out there and it kept getting rave reviews, so I decided to try it out.” 2. The List by Siobhan Vivian – July 18, 2014 “The basic plot summary is as follows: at some random high school, each year […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #231: Rainy Day

Top Ten Tuesdays #231: Rainy Day

Rainy Day Reads Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. You can take this a few different ways based on how YOU like to spend a rainy day reading – maybe books with rainy settings, sweeping fantasy reads that pull you in and out of wherever you are, long books to curl up with and get lost in, or short books that you can binge in one day… I’ve decided to talk about all of these today! Stereotypically Rainy Settings Seattle | Parts of Europe (Ireland) If you google some stereotypically rainy places, you’re likely going to see Ireland and Seattle, WA on the list. I was going to include some more but these three books jumped out at me, so here we are with two locations. SERIOUS MOONLIGHT really showed the quirky side to Seattle, which I appreciated (as someone who has never been there!). Both LOVE & LUCK and THE UPSIDE OF FALLING DOWN featured heroines in Ireland… definitely experiencing vastly different things while they’re there! Pretend You’re Somewhere Else Portal fantasy | Cute small beach town | Huge manor | Cross-country train trip One of my favorite fantasy duos is THE MARKED GIRL and THE BROKEN WORLD, because apparently […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #230: Outrageous Bookish Things

Things I’ve Done for the Love of Books Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This is such a unique topic! I honestly can’t think of a lot of outrageous things I’ve done for my love of books, so I’ll spin this topic a little bit. I’ll talk about bookish habits or weird things I’ve done (or currently do) for books, as well as some of those books that made me stay up too late! Reading at Work I try to behave at work and not do too many personal things when I need to get things done… but there are a few books that just needed to get done based on deadlines! They’re mostly surrounding ARC tours and mailing deadlines from back in the day, but sometimes book club is coming or addiction just overtakes me. Dream a Little Dream by Kerstin Gier and Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon (borrowed and read for an ARC tour, needed to mail THAT DAY and hadn’t finished the books yet) Shadowlands trilogy by Kate Brian (was so addicted to these that I read all three books in quick succession through a week that my boss was out on vacation) The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson (only had […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #229: Read-Bait

Top Ten Tuesdays #229: Read-Bait

Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. The topic for this week is about the things that make you pick up a book. This is a similar topic or question to my read-bait series of posts, where I discuss the words or phrases within a book’s synopsis that immediately draw me in. I’ll highlight a good portion of those (because the majority of them still ring true!) and also some of the other factors (aside from what’s directly in the synopsis) that make me pick a book up or add it to my TBR. There’s another TTT here with some topics too, in case this isn’t thorough enough! The books you see mixed in are those that really hit the nail on the head for Lauren-bait. Read-Bait Topics or Words Wishes being granted or fulfilled (could be by a genie or some paranormal/magical realism etc.) Travel-related meet cutes (people who fall in love/meet on a train or in an airport etc.) Disappearances “Everyone is connected somehow” (coming together over shared event, etc.) Winning the lottery and/or rich people Bucket lists Family drama or reunions (people coming back together or secrets being unveiled) Memory loss Stuck in […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #228: Audio

Top Ten Tuesdays #228: Audio

Audio Freebie: Favorites Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. The topic for this week is an audio-related freebie. I probably spend more of my week listening to podcasts than I do listening to audiobooks, but I’ve done a good job balancing them lately. The first few days of the week will usually involve podcast episodes (since I have some scheduled to come out each weekend and in the early part of the work week) and the rest of the week will be more audiobook-focused. I thought I would highlight some very broad categories of audio-related favorites, including narrators, services, and books themselves for this freebie topic! Favorite Narrator: Julia Whalen She will easily be my favorite narrator, forever. I’ve listened to her narrate some TJR books (excellent) and a few others. She just has the best voice and I can’t get enough of it. I think you’ll see her on a lot of people’s lists this week because she seriously knows what she’s doing. Listened to already: Here are some of the books I’ve already listened to and enjoyed her narration for… even if the book wasn’t perfect lol. (Note: I have listened to all three books in the Charlotte Holmes series but […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #227: Spring TBR

Top Ten Tuesdays #227: Spring TBR

Top Spring Releases on my TBR (that I don’t already have review copies of) Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. The topic for this week is your spring TBR but I already did a spring bingo TBR (and do monthly TBRs), so I thought I would expand specifically into books releasing in the spring that are on my to-read list! These are March, April, and May releases. I purposely did not put any advanced copies I have on here… even if I’m super excited for them. March A Question of Holmes by Cavallaro | The Fairest Kind of Love by Cestari Crashing the A-List by Heacock | Killing November by Mather (1) I’ve been casually enjoying the Charlotte Holmes series and am mildly excited for the next book. I don’t know why, but I don’t LOVE this series… yet I keep feeling the need to read each new installment? I think it’s because the audiobooks are easy listening. Note: I realized I have yet to read the LAST book in the series like an idiot. (2) There’s another sequel in the Windy City Magic series, which I think is adorable. It’s not perfect but it’s cute, young, and fluffy paranormal-ish YA. Also note: […]
