Top Ten Tuesdays #118: New-to-Me

Top New-To-Me Authors I Read For The First Time In 2016 Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I ended up narrowing this down quite a bit! I read a good amount of 2016 debut books AND a lot of “established” authors for the first time. Here are some of my favorites from this year, plus the next book I have to read by them. Some authors I read their newest book and have to go back to the previously published one next, and some were debuts who have a new book coming out soonish.I was a huge fan of History is All You Left Me, which I read waaay back in the summer even though the book doesn’t come out until January. It was fantastic, so I need to head back and read his debut next.Tell Me Three Things was definitely a 2016 favorite. I loved her style of writing and that cover always makes me hungry! She has a few adult fiction books on her backlist I may read, but I love the sound of her 2017 book.OMG The Fixer and The Long Game were so perfect. They broke me out of a major slump and kept me turning pages like crazy. I have to read her […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #117: Holiday Gift Guide

Ten YA Books I’d Buy My Sister for Christmas Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is a Holiday Gift Guide freebie (ten books to buy the YA lover in your life, 10 books to buy for your dad, etc.). I’m loving these open-ended freebies! My little sister is 14 years old – soon to be 15 in April, holy shit – and she reads a lot of YA along with me. She has some similar books on her “TBR” and there are some I’d like to buy for her this year for Christmas. I usually get her Lego sets and I’ve already bought her a pair of Lularoe leggings for Christmas, so I don’t go the book route. In any case, here are 10 books I’d buy her!My little sister, Jordyn, loves the Harry Potter books (as everyone should) and tends to read a good amount of contemporary as well. She loves any books about fanfiction and books with “nerd” in the title because she feels like she is one! (No shame in that game.) She is obsessed with YouTubers and uses the word “ship” on a regular basis, with just about anyone/anything. She’s one of us! She does color guard in the high school band and is very […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #116: Thanksgiving

Ten Things & Books I’m Thankful For Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is a Thanksgiving Freebie where you can talk about books or things you’re thankful for. I wanted to combine the two (I’ve done this in the past, where I’ve talked about books, people, and authors I’m thankful for, as well as which characters I’d spend Thanksgiving with). It’s been a shitty month, to say the least, so I hope putting together this positive post puts a smile on our faces. These are in no specific order! (Do you really think I like pumpkin-flavored things more than my friends? Actually, hmmmm…..) Chris     I’m always, always thankful for Chris. I love spending time with him and having a partner who makes me laugh every single day. Whether we’re just sitting on the couch watching a movie or doing separate things (reading and video games), going out on a hike, spending time with friends or family, or heading out on some kind of adventure… we always know how to have the best time. We’re almost always on the same page and hope for the same things out of life. Sometimes I can’t believe it’s been four years and other times it feels like it’s […]

Library Love | November

Library Love | November

I’ve been wanting to share some library hauls on the blog, since I don’t usually include them in my monthly wrap-ups. I just show the books I acquired for keeps instead of the ones I’m renting 😉 However, the library has been really fantastic lately. I go through phases where I use it A LOT and phases where I forget it exists somehow. Whenever the mood strikes, I’ll share what I’m working on from the library during any given month. I haven’t done one of these since April so I thought it was due time… since I went crazy last time! The Choices We Make by Karma Brown | I adored her debut so incredibly much. I’m really nervous this one won’t hold up, but I’ve seen nothing but great reviews so far! I’m sure I’ll need to pick this one up when I’m in the mood to cry again, because good lorddddd did her first book make me SOB. Interference by Kay Honeyman | This was added to my hold list on a whim (I think someone posted a review that I saw?) and recently came in. I love anything football related. The really broad comparisons for this one make it seem like it’ll be similar to another favorite of mine (Jane Austin + football), so we’ll see! Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas | No-brainer. I decided to hold off on buying the audio of this for now so I can test out actually reading one of the books in this […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #115: Favorite Movies

Ten of my Favorite Comedy Movies Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is… Movie Freebie — top ten all time favorite movies, top ten foreign films, top ten rom-coms, top ten 90’s movies, top ten action flicks, top ten tear-jerkers, top ten movies your favorite actor/actress is in, top ten movies with PoC leads, etc. etc.). I guess my natural inclination was to do top ten favorite movies because I haven’t talked about this as much on the blog… but I got sidetracked with just comedies. Other posts about movies I love, if you’re interested: Getting to Know You Blog Hop: Favorite Movies and Music Book People Talk Movies: Animated Movies – The Lion King and other favorites Book People Talk Movies: Bad Movies – The Room and Wet Hot American Summer What About Bob? I used to watch this movie nonstop when I was a kid. My parents and I would quote it ALL THE TIME (especially every time we ate corn). I watched it again a few months ago and it had been quite a few years since the previous time. I’m so glad Chris loved it because this movie is (a) hilarious and (b) incredibly important to me. Good Burger This movie is truly […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #114: New to the TBR

Ten Books I’ve Added to my To-Be-Read List Lately Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. Jamie’s New to the Queue posts are always enjoyable to read and I’ve done posts like this in the past – both for TTT and just for fun. I even posted about to-be-released books I’m excited about last week. Hopefully you’re not sick of these. I dug around to make sure there wasn’t a lot of overlap between all those posts! We Are Still Tornadoes by Michal Kun and Susan Mullen // There are so many things I love about this book’s synopsis… childhood best friends into more-than-friends, the 80s vibes, writing letters to each other, etc. Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers // I wasn’t sure if this book was literally just full of notes they left on a refrigerator, but the synopsis certainly implies it. We’ll see how that goes, but I’m intrigued. All I Want for Christmas by Jenny Hale // I can’t believe it took me so long to realize this book was a thing! I requested it from NetGalley immediately because Jenny Hale’s Christmas stories are MY FAVORITES. The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden // So this synopsis has a LOT going on and I’m really not even sure what it’s […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #113: Seasonal Book Club

Ten Books to Read if Your Book Club Likes Seasonal Reads Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic is… Top Ten Books To Read If Your Book Club Likes _______________ (if your book club likes historical fiction, inspiring stories, YA books, non-fiction, controversial books to debate about, or pick a specific book).  This was a tough one to narrow down because I feel like I’ve done quite a few book club TTTs in the past. I like the freebie nature of this one though. I decided to go with books your book club should read if you read seasonally. There are lots of bloggers (myself included) who read based on the seasons. Cristina and I do our Book Buddies based on each season because it’s fun to match it up to the ~vibes~ of that month. I wanted to give out some recs for each month of the year – minus two – for your book club! January Meeting: Cozy Winter Read Snowed In by Rachel Hawthorne //// This book did involve a little bit of the holiday season, if I remember correctly, but it was really just a perfect winter book! The setting of a cold, snowy island and a bed and breakfast? To die for! I […]

Wednesday Wrap-Up #2 | WOW & WWW

Wednesday Wrap-Up #2 | WOW & WWW

I don’t like to do too many weekly memes on the blog (anymore) and usually stick to TTT, but I thought it would be fun to occasionally post Wednesday memes I’m interested in. It won’t be weekly, but it’ll be fun to recap the previous week or so and talk about what books I have on the docket. It will be a combination of WWW Wednesdays and Waiting on Wednesdays (more details below!), as well as anything else I’d like to share. Waiting on…Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine and asks upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating. I’m currently waiting impatiently for… The Amateurs by Sara Shepard Release Date: November 1st 2016 As soon as Seneca Frazier sees the post on the Case Not Closed website about Helena Kelly, she’s hooked. Helena’s high-profile disappearance five years earlier is the one that originally got Seneca addicted to true crime. It’s the reason she’s a member of the site in the first place. So when Maddy Wright, her best friend from the CNC site, invites Seneca to spend spring break in Connecticut looking into the cold case, she immediately packs her bag. But the moment she steps off the train in trendy, glamorous Dexby, things begin to go wrong. Maddy is nothing like she expected, and Helena’s sister, Aerin Kelly, seems completely hostile and totally uninterested in helping with their murder investigation. But when Brett, another super user from the site, joins Seneca and Maddy in Dexby, Aerin starts to come around. The police must have missed something, […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #112: Halloween

Ten of my Favorite Halloween Costumes and Books I’d Pair with Them! Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic is… Halloween related freebie: ten scary books, favorite horror novels, non-scary books to get you in the Halloween/fall mood, bookish halloween costumes, scariest covers), scary books on my TBR, etc. Well, I really don’t read horror books or anything remotely creepy most of the time, so I decided to make this one a little more personal. I’m featuring some of my favorite Halloween costumes I’ve worn, then matching book recommendations to them! It may be based on a certain character or aspect of the costume; you’ll see 😉 The costume: My college friends and I dressed up as “milestone birthdays” as a group during our senior year. This is one my all-time favorite costumes. We hit various birthdays throughout your life. From left to right, we have the 1st birthday with a onesie and pacifier, the 16th birthday with all the girly pink, the 18th birthday with clubbing outfit and cigarettes, the 21st birthday with shot glasses, and the 50th birthday with a modest sweater outfit. The book: The Year We Turned Forty by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke // I didn’t LOVE this book but I did really enjoy it as […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #111: Names

Top Ten Tuesdays #111: Names

Ten Character Names I Love Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: Ten Characters I’d Name A Child/Dog/Cat/Car/Etc. after — we did this topic back in 2011 and thought it might be fun to revisit it…feel free to spin it how you need! This is really fun. I’m terrible about remembering names though. I just went through my “read” list on Goodreads and pulled out names (even if they were common ones) that I loved. Most of these names were actually already on my ~favorite name~ list before reading the books, but it helps that I saw them again 😉 I split these into boys and girls names. As you can see, I do kind of like more unique names! I’m not sure if I would really name a child a few of these (Frances, Aster, Ronan, and Griffin) but the rest are definitely ones I’d enjoy naming a kid or pet. I’ve always loved Lucas, Reed, Tucker (I know this is a last name, but I love it as a first name!), Harper, Avery, and Piper. A lot of these are definitely not because I enjoyed the character themselves. Some of these people were real buttholes and their inclusion here is purely name-related. And now for the […]
