Top Ten Tuesdays #156: Halloween

Halloween Freebie: Bookish Costume Ideas Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I always love the creativity from some bloggers during the Halloween freebie TTT week! I usually do something more basic relating to my favorite Halloween costumes (paired with books of course!), Halloweeny or creepy books I’ve read or plan to read, and other media to get you in the mood for the holiday. This year, I wanted to be creative and do something else – bookish costumes! I know this has been done before by everyone but it involved some thinking for me, which is tough 😉 Heartless – Queen of Hearts This is an obvious one, but who can resist? I wanted to add in some baking-related elements, since that’s primarily what this story is about. I went all red, hearts, and queenly for the accessories. Typing in “Queen of Hears” on Polyvore was very fruitful for me 😉 In Some Other Life – Different Versions of Kennedy This is a paired costume you could do with a friend (or even better – a twin sister!). Kennedy lives out two timelines in this book, so each person could represent one of them. The left is the prep school girl she almost was; the right is the […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #155: Unique Titles

Ten Unique Book Titles Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic is “Top Ten Unique Book Titles.” I guess this can really mean anything, but I decided to highlight some books whose titles definitely intrigued me (or I just thought were super weird). I’ve read all of these except the last three; those are all on my TBR.

Top Ten Tuesdays #154: Food

Ten Food-y Books | Books that Made Me Hungry Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic is “Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned In Books (Does a character eat something you’d love? Or maybe the book takes place in a bakery/restaurant that makes yummy things?).” I’ve done this topic before on the blog and am going to repeat myself a little, so bear with me. Books that made me crave certain foods based on specific scenes and settings    Just Visiting made me crave a bacon tuna melt and diner food | A good portion of this book takes place in a diner where one of the main characters works. Bacon tuna melts are constantly consumed in this book and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever craved something so much while reading! There were some other diner-y meals in this one, like a big cheeseburger, that I desperately wanted too. Saint Anything made me crave pizza and french fries |There’s actually a lot of good food in Dessen’s books (because at least 3-4 of them, including this one, involve restaurants in some capacity). This book in particular though? Definitely didn’t help my CONSTANT pizza craving I have on a regular basis. The family-owned pizza restaurant featured here made me need pizza and fries regularly. […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #153: Autumn Books

Ten Books that Remind Me of Fall Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic is “Ten Books With Fall/Autumn Covers/Themes.” I didn’t want to limit myself to just one of those options, so I pulled it all together and will be sharing ten books that remind me of fall. It could be because of their cover (fall-like or spooky, perhaps), the season they take place in, or the genre. I’ve done something similar with summery covers and TBH that was much easier.

Top Ten Tuesdays #151: Characters

Ten Characters Who Could Be My Friend Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is about book that feature characters who [fill in the blank]! I decided to take a small spin on this one and do ten books with that feature main characters who I’d be friends with in real life. I may have done something like this at some point, but I can’t seem to locate it. I thought it’d be time for an update! As always, I have a Goodreads shelf for this kind of thing if you’re curious about the other books I didn’t feature here. Sarcastic, Funny, Real, and Fierce Ladies Emma from One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid | Starr from The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas | Becca from Hello, Sunshine by Leila Howland | Summer from Cure for the Common Breakup by Beth Kendrick | Amber from The Best Kind of Magic by Crystal Cesari Jessie from Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum | Katie from My Not-So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella | Kaia from Pretty Fierce by Kieran Scott | Dimple from When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon | Elle from Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Top Ten Tuesdays #150: Fall TBR

Top Books on my Fall TBR Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I love TBR posts. Can’t help it. I feel like I’ve made 10 in the last month alone, for various reasons, but I’m always happy to bring another one around. There are PLENTY of books I’ve been pushing off for no reason, plus the excellent new fall releases to start at some point. (I loved Cristina’s post the other day about falling into fantasy books because I do the same thing with fantasy in the autumn! You’ll see some “heavier” books here now that summer is over.) Here are ten-ish books on my fall TBR that I must read. See also: September TBR, Fall Bingo TBR, and End of Summer Reading Plans I’m definitely a seasonal reader – I prefer my heavier, fantasy, or somewhat-spooky reads to happen in the fall. I keep things much lighter in the summer for the beach, so you can bet that my fall feels happen the minute September starts. I hope to read some spookier books, like What Waits in the Woods and What Waits in the Water by Kieran Scott (second not pictured) and There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins. I think that Haunting the Deep by Adriana Mather will be more […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #149: Throwback to 2014

Ten Books I Loved the Year I Started Blogging Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I’m kind of obsessed with this topic for today’s TTT! It’s a throwback freebie that can involve the books you loved when you first started blogging, books published 5-10 years ago, etc. I definitely wanted to go with the top ten books I loved back in 2014 when I first started blogging. 2014 was a really weird blogging and reading year for me. I started my blog in July and read some random books beforehand, but started to really get into the YA groove by the time it was nearing 2015. In any case, here are some of my favorite books I read in 2014. PS: check out the very relevant guest post I made on Ginger’s blog last week! And a throwback to the exact graphic I made for my “best of 2014” blog post… Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver | This book still holds up as an all-time favorite. I reread it earlier this year and was not disappointed. I’m not sure what it is, but I just love it. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty | This book still remains my favorite Liane Moriarty book. I know I’m in the minority here in terms of […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #148: DNFs

Top Ten Tuesdays #148: DNFs

Six DNFs of 2017 Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s topic involves books that made you struggle in some way (struggled to get into but ended up loving, were hard to get into but loved, or recently DNFed). I don’t DNF books that often because I always hope books get better. This year, I’ve already DNFed more than probably the last few years combined. I don’t write DNF reviews or even talk about them at all, so this is a good place for that. 2017 DNF’s or Books on Hold Here are the six books I’ve DNFed or sort of put on hold this year. The last one is iffy because I’m still sort of slugging my way through, at the time of writing this. I’m including the mini Goodreads reviews I wrote.    Don’t You Wish by Roxanne St. Claire | “DNF at page 130. There’s really nothing wrong with this book I guess, except it wasn’t what I wanted. I love parallel universe books but that aspect isn’t really obvious. Basically the girl gets transported to a universe where she’s rich because her mom married someone else. Not sure how that gets resolved, but I don’t want to bother finding out. The main plot is that […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #147: Hidden Gems

Top Ten Tuesdays #147: Hidden Gems

Ten Hidden Gems in (Mostly YA) Fiction Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I feel like I always repeat the same books for these “underrated books” topics, but hey – those are the books that often need the most love and pushing! I was originally going to do just contemporary YA but there were a few non-contemps that I HAD to mention. It just didn’t feel right to leave them out! Aaand then of courses there’s one or two adult fiction books on here, because clearly limiting myself to one genre/age is not possible. Juniper Lemon’s Happiness Index by Julie Israel | The Awkward Path to Getting Lucky by Summer Heacock | Pretty Fierce by Kieran Scott | Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham | Just Like Fate by Kat Patrick and Suzanne Young | The One Thing by Marci Lyn Curtis | It’s a Wonderful Death by Sarah J. Schmitt | Monstrous Beauty by Elizabath Fama | Sometimes We Tell the Truth by Kim Zarins
