Top Ten Tuesdays #110: Recommended to Me

Five Books I Read Because of a Recommendation and Five Books I Added to the TBR from Recs Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: All About Books You Read Because of Recommendation — Ten Books I’ve Read Because Of Another  Blogger (Or Book Person) or Ten Books I Read On Recommendation From People Outside Of This Community or you could talk about recommendations of books you read from other sources — a magazine, a podcast, a “because you read this” algorithm.  I love this topic because I really have TRIED lately to read books when they’re specifically recommended to me. If I don’t get to them right away, I still make it a point to add them to my TBR. Because I’m not great about reading them I wanted to split this into five and five.     The Hating Game by Sally Thorne // Recommended by Morgan This book has taken the blogging world by storm, but the biggest influence for me to read it was Morgan. She seems to be leading the pack in terms of early readers 😉  She told our Fantasy Football group to read it ASAP, right on the same day my hold came in at the library. So, yes, it was […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #109: Villains

Villain Superlatives & Punchable Characters Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: All About Villains – top ten favorite/most compelling villains in books, top ten of the most vile villains/bad guys in books, top ten villains I secretly (or not so secretly) love, favorite tv villains, favorite comic book villains, ten “villains” of contemporary lit. Because I’m not someone who actively looks for villains or likes/hates them I’m going to give out top six villain superlatives! I’ll be giving each villain/book a superlative for what they really excelled at as I read them. I loved how Hannah used superlatives for recent TTTs. I’m also going to share four punchable characters from books I’ve read. Yes, I ran out of villains and needed to fill the space but whatever okayyyy? Six Villain Superlatives    Most Likely to Fall in Love With // The Darkling The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo • I feel like most people loved The Darkling even though he was pretty evil, and clearly the villain of the series. I have such a bad bookish memory but I know I wish he had a different ending (I just don’t remember what his ending was to be honest). I know there were a lot of Darkling-Alina shippers out there, so I know he’s […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #108: Fall TBR

Ten Books on my Fall TBR Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: Books On My Fall TBR List. These are always my favorite TTT topics because I love making TBR lists. Do I love following them once I make them though? No, of course not. You know I’m terrible at TBRs. I seriously love being organized and making lists of all kinds, so it’s no surprise that I still enjoy making these lists. Without further ado, here are the books I sincerely hope I can read this fall! Library Books   Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies by Laura Stampler ///  I was intrigued by this little rom-com book when I first caught it on Goodreads, so I immediately requested it from the library. I was going to read it after The Hating Game but didn’t want to do two workplace comedies in a row. The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee /// This is another one that’s been on my radar for a super long time. I was going to preorder it but decided to just to the library thing first. I’ve seen mixed reviews but I really think I’ll personally enjoy it. Can’t wait to finally dive in!   Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas /// […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #107: Audiobooks

Ten Audiobooks on my Upcoming Audio TBR Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: All About Audio freebie —  aka top ten audiobooks you should listen to, 10 books I want to listen to on audio, 10 bands you should check out, 10 podcasts you should be listening to, 10 of my all time favorite albums, 10 songs I love, really whatever you can come up with.  I’m definitely an avid audiobook listener but I don’t think I listen as much as other people! I always have one going for the most part, unless I need a break. I usually have a pretty good idea what’s on deck for me to listen to immediately when I finish another one, but sometimes I’m scratching my head about what to get next. I primarily use audiobooks if I whispersync from Amazon, the old audiobooks on my Audible account I bought before cancelling, and – most importantly – Hoopla from the library. They have a fantastic selection for YA books and lots of popular adult ones too. When Scribd switched to non-unlimited, I put that account on pause. Regardless, here are ten audiobooks on my radar that I plan on listening to sometime very soon! On Hoopla through the Library […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #106: Favorite Paranormal

Nine Favorite Paranormal-ish Books Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: Top Ten ALL TIME Favorite Books Of X Genre (I know, I know. Picking all time faves. I’m MEAN. But I like knowing people’s definitive faves). Can also break it down into sub-genre if that helps?   I decided to go with a category that already doesn’t have a lot of books that I’ve read in it – paranormal-ish. I say ish because I’m pretty terrible about understanding the difference between paranormal, magical realism, sci-fi and fantasy at times. In any case, here’s my list for some of my favorite paranormal-like books. Paranormal & Magical Elements in the Real World I don’t read a lot of straight up paranormal books involving magical creatures. I do, however, like when paranormal or fantasy elements are integrated in the real world. Most of these books have some kind of magical element to them but also take place in our world. I guess that’s the textbook definition of paranormal, but I did keep out the books involving creatures instead of magical/fantastical things or events. Dream a Little Dream by Kerstin Gier • traveling into each other’s dreams Rebel Belle trilogy by Rachel Hawkins • unique paranormal with Paladins and prophecies Down With the Shine […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #105: Fall TV

Fall TV Freebie: Ten Favorite TV Shows Ever Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is: In honor of Fall TV, do a tv-themed topic! Top ten favorite tv shows of all time, ten new shows coming out this Fall that are on my radar, tv shows I wish never got cancelled, tv shows I would recommend to book characters, books I wish would be tv shows, ten favorite shows from the late 90’s or early 2000’s, ten tv shows for every fantasy lover, etc. As usual, all of these ideas sound amazing. It took me forever to narrow this down to just one of these topics! I figured I don’t talk about TV too much on here except in passing, so I wanted to talk about my all-time favorite shows. The other topics may come sometime in the future! Friends I think this should go without saying because I try to toss a Friends gif in every review I write. I once cried about how much I loved Friends on New Years because people didn’t seem to understand it. I don’t even like talking about Friends with some people because I just don’t think they GET IT. There are some people I know I can count on though 😉 […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #104: Back to School

Back to School Freebie: Required Reading Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is a Back To School Freebie — anything “back to school” related like 10 favorite books I read in school, books I think should be required reading, required reading for all fantasy fans, required reading for every college freshman, books to pair with classics or books to complement a history lesson, books that would be on my classroom shelf if I were a teacher. WAY too many great options for this TTT! It took me a while but I decided to do a mix of a couple of these and make a “required reading” umbrella post. Course catalog entry: Explore history in a new way! Learn about past historical figures through present-day retellings and explore historical fiction with a magical twist. This course will cover figures such as Lady Jane Grey and Anne Boleyn, while also exploring other time periods of history. Required reading: A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray • 1800s + magic My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows • Tudors + magic Anne & Henry by Dawn Ius • Present-day version of Anne Boleyn Course catalog entry: Learn about the great YA Contemporary genre through some of the industry’s best. This course […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #103: Pre-Blogging TBR

Ten Books that Have Been on Your Shelf/TBR from Before Blogging that You STILL Haven’t Read Yet Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is the top ten books that you’ve had on your TBR (physical or digital!) from your pre-blogging days that you still haven’t read. I definitely wanted to examine the books on my physical shelves – especially because I’m not doing so great at reading from my personal collection – and hopefully it pushes me to get going on them. All of these books were published and acquired by me in 2014 or earlier. Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison • This is definitely one of those pivotal growing-up series that many people have read. I bought it back in the day when they did the cover redesign and just never got arond to reading it for some reason. I’ve heard it’s hilarious though. I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella • I went through a big Kinsella phase right before I started blogging and I want to get back into her backlist. I read the Shopaholic books (maybe the first three or so) back in the day and really enjoyed them too. This one seems great. Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein • This […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #102: Beach Setting

Top Ten Tuesdays #102: Beach Setting

Ten Beach Settings in Books that I Loved Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This week’s TTT is the top ten books with X setting (boarding school, England, etc.). I chose one of my favorite bookish settings – BEACH TOWNS. I was thinking of the boarding school thing but I recently talked about this since it’s one of my read-bait terms for sure.I’m usually all about the summery, beachy contemporaries during the warm months. I often save books specifically for summertime for that reason. I don’t go to the beach very much, even though there are plenty closeby, so these books are a perfect alternative for me during the summer. Fluffy contemps are perfectly fine during this time of year, but the ones that are literally set on the beach or in a beachy town location are THE BEST. Here are ten of my favorite books with beach settings. Keeping the Moon and Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen The ultimate book setting is Colby, North Carolina. I’ve never had more desire to visit a fictional place in my life. Colby appears to be the perfect little beach town and acts as the main setting for a handful of Dessen’s books. It’s referenced in a few more. NEED […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #101: Rewind – Covers

Rewind: Do a Topic You Missed! Things I Like/Dislike on Book Covers Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. Back in June 2014, Top Ten Tuesday featured a topic perfect for me: top ten things we like or dislike on our book covers. This topic was literally a few weeks before I started my blog and I’m so happy I just saw it! I always always always talk about book covers on my blog. (Like, too often to even link everything this time. Just search for “covers” and you’ll see an abundance of things!) Book covers are my F A V O R I T E and I don’t know if I ever spelled out in a nice, concise, list-y way the things that I LOVE or HATE on book covers. Without further ado, I’ll tackle that today for you, my dear cover lovers. Keep in mind that obviously some of these covers fit multiple categories. I tried to keep them with the category involving the “element” I love most about the cover. Like, I love the watercolor elements on First & Then but the heart shape is what really makes me happiest. I’m definitely not linking to Goodreads here because I’m lazy and there are a LOT of covers, but you […]
