Top Ten Tuesdays #90: On a Whim

Ten Books on a Whim: TBR Adds & Super Early Reads Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. This weeks topic is: Ten Books I Picked Up On A Whim (however you decide to interpret that (bought or read or something else) — I know most people read based on recommendation but we want to know those books you picked up without really hearing about or knowing much about!) – I do generally pick up books because they’ve been rec’d by other people or widely enjoyed. There are some books I add to my TBR without hearing anything about them first, just because they appear on a Goodreads sidebar or in a store. There are lots of books that I borrow from an ARC tour and read super early before the pub date and there are no other reviews yet. These are interesting because there is ZERO outside noise before shaping my opinion. I am able to read the book and digest it as if I weren’t a book blogger for once 😉  Because I like both interpretations here, I’m going to split off my TTT because we all love to do that. Because of the timing of ARC tours, I tend to get a lot of books way before their pub date. I read […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #89: Non-Bookish Sites

Ten Websites/Blogs I Love That Aren’t About Books Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I recently started following a lot of non-bookish blogs on Bloglovin. I wanted to diversify my feed a little bit and learn about more things. I’ve started getting into cooking, so I’ve noticed a few more of those blogs pop up in my reader too. Today I’ll be sharing the top ten non-bookish websites or blogs that I read regularly. Helene in Between • Helene focuses on blogging tips and webinars lately, which aren’t exactly up my alley, but I love everything she shares. She has funny stories and observations about life. I’ve also loved reading about her move from her hometown (Dallas) to a new city (Nashville). It’s something I hope to follow in my own life soon! Not Entirely Perfect • I love Stephanie’s posts! She focuses on finance, saving money, living a more minimalistic life, and her adorable dog. She has a variety of topics she covers and it’s always refreshing. She’s been sharing Three on Thursday posts lately where she talks about new things she’s into (kind of like my Five on Friday posts!). Making Sense of Cents • This blog focuses specifically on finance, but I love reading about her life on the road with […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #88: Revisiting Characters

Top Ten Tuesdays #88: Revisiting Characters

Ten Characters I’d Love to Revisit in 10 Years Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. The very large, excellent topic idea for this week is Ten Childhood/YA Characters You’d Love To Revisit As Adults: {(ie a novella or something to see what they grew up to be) — you could always just pick YA characters you’ve read recently you wouldn’t mind revisiting in 10 years or so. Or you could pick 10 characters and guess what you think they’d be doing in 10 years or 20 years. OR you could go the other way and wish for coming of age stories for adult characters you love.} I love this topic! I decided to go with the idea of revisiting characters in 10 years.I split this into three sections because there are always questions you have about the future when you finish a book. Does your OTP stay together forever even though they met when they were 16? Does the world come to an end? Do people have more character growth? Someone give me some answers or a nice 10-years-later-novella. I am going to use spoiler tags when I have specific ending-related questions about the book. Everything else is vague enough! Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell | WHAT ARE THE WORDS? […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #80: Characters

Characters I Couldn’t Relate To & Others May Disagree Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I’m kind of changing this topic a little bit because I really can’t think of many characters that fall under this umbrella of “everyone loves but I didn’t” or “I love but everyone else doesn’t.” I decided to take a less intense version of this and talk about the characters I couldn’t relate to, but others may have liked more than I did. I mostly enjoyed these books but the characters made me cringe or annoyed me or just didn’t resonate with me at all. Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell /// I know, I know. Put down your pitchforks. I really can appreciate and understand how SO many of you love and relate to Cath. I just didn’t. She really bugged me (maybe it was partly due to the audio narrator?) and I just couldn’t get by it. Kate from Things I Can’t Forget by Miranda Kenneally /// Nearly everyone I’ve talked to about this actually DOES agree with me about Kate, but I know there are most likely some people who related to her. Her fierce religiousness and sense of right and wrong just totally didn’t work for me. I’m not good with books centered around religion, […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #55: Series

Ten Finished Series I NEED to Finish (or Start!) Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. I’m actually not TOO bad at finishing series once I start them. If the books are published and I started the series, there’s a good chance I finished it too. I could only think of five published series that I still need to finish… so, I decided to also show five finished series that I want to read but haven’t yet! Boomerang trilogy by Noelle August Read: Boomerang | To Read: Rebound, Bounce I actually loved the first book, which could be why I’m so nervous to read the next two! I’ve heard some mixed things about both of them. I know they’ll be super quick reads but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. New Adult has been on the back burner! Private series by Kate Brian Read: Books #1-11 | To Read: Book of Spells, Vanished, Ominous, Vengeance I absolutely loved this series and remember buying and reading each book immediately when it came out. It was really the first series (aside from Harry Potter, obviously) that I tracked when each book was coming out and bought them. Once I finished the 11th book and knew I had to read the prequel, I lost some […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #54: Characters

Ten Characters I Didn’t Click With Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review. Ah yes, this topic is an interesting one. There are plenty of books where the main character annoys the crap out of me or just doesn’t work for me, so here are ten of them! Jane from Signs Point to Yes by Sandy Hall – These characters were all kinds of awkward, and not in an endearing way. I couldn’t click with them and cringed at a lot of the dialogue. Tamsen from Young Widows Club by Alexandra Coutts – For such a sad topic, this book didn’t give me really any emotions at all. Tam had no interests or hobbies except for her the ones she shared with her deceased husband, and I just didn’t connect with her. Ally from Behind the Scenes by Dahlia Adler – I loved the second book in this series, but the first one wasn’t as good for me because of Ally. She was a bit overdramatic and I liked all of the side characters more than her! Charlotte from Even in Paradise by Chelsey Philpot – I’m still sad about this book. I was so excited for it and it just didn’t work for me. Charlotte was a follower with very little […]

Top Ten Tuesdays #38: Characters

Top 10 12 Characters Who… Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books based on that week’s prompt… and then we stalk other people’s answers to add a million books to our TBR. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Links go to Goodreads or my review. I couldn’t make up my mind on what topic I wanted to do for this very open week of TTT, so I decided to give a sampling of the few that were going through my mind. Explanations and links to reviews/Goodreads at the bottom! The characters that… I couldn’t connect with anyone from The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour – I picked this one up on a whim at the library because I’ve been wanting to read a book by Nina LaCour and the cover is cool. I didn’t realize the MC was a guy at first, which is fine, but I just couldn’t connect to him or his friends. At all. They read like manic pixie dream girls people who were able to float around wherever they wanted. Do these kids have parents? I also REALLY didn’t like Bev and what she did to Colby. I couldn’t forgive her and didn’t like her. I couldn’t connect with Blake from The Pretty App by Katie Sise – She was the kind of popular, pretty girl who spends the whole book complaining about how people only judge her on those qualities. Yes, […]
