Movies or Shows That
Would’ve Made Great Books
Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review.
I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do this one but I decided it seemed fun once I came up with my first example 😉 Don’t come at me if some of these shows and movies are already books – clearly I didn’t research before this post and went off vibes! haha.
Kaleidoscope
I really enjoyed this show on Netflix when it came out. It involves a big heist and apparently each of the episodes (named after a color) can be watched in any order, as long as you watch one specific episode last. Heist books are really fun and adding in some kind of “choose your own adventure” element like this show could be awesome.
The Curse
Okay so we haven’t finished this show yet but I do think so far it would make for a very weird little book! It’s entertaining and cringey in the classic way of Nathan Fielder. I do think he brings something unique to the performance that could be hard to capture in a book but the premise itself would work, IMO.
The White Lotus
I love this show – it has the absolute BEST vibes. Just obsessed. I think any and all seasons of this could be great books. Tropical and/or vacation settings for murder mysteries with unique casts of characters are SO fun. If you told me this show was based on books already I’d believe you.
The After Party
I really enjoyed both seasons of this show. It’s kind of a classic detective story – someone dies and all of the people “locked in” the house are suspects. They each share their version of events and then the lead detective has to figure out whodunnit and why based on people’s stories that may or may not stretch the truth. Seems like Agatha Christie-esque but added humor!
The Bear
I love this show so much. Just amazing television. I think it could absolutely be a book as well. We’ll see where the next few seasons go but I think they’d consolidate some plot points and need a good conclusion. The overall premise of starting up a restaurant and everything that goes along with it would be great.
XO, Kitty
Okay perhaps this is kind of cheating because this is a spinoff of TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE, which are movies based on a book series. I just think Jenny Han could have made a very cute lil book about Kitty before it was a show too 😉 International boarding school vibes!
Only Murders in the Building
Yes I will try to stop including so many murder mysteries on this list but c’mon – this has a cozy mystery book series absolutely written all over it. I can’t believe it isn’t already one. Each season would make for a perfect installment in a cozy series with this apartment building as the centerpiece, and our three main characters leading the charge.
Severance
God I was so obsessed with this when it came out and absolutely can’t wait for the next season. It would make for such a great sci-fi/dystopian kind of book! I would absolutely read it. I know some scenes like the one above could be very hard to describe but I think the right author could pull it off.
Falling for Christmas
I really enjoyed this cheesy little rom-com with Lindsay Lohan back on our screens! I’ve only included shows on here so far and thought adding a movie would be a good idea. This could have easily been inspired by a Christmas book! It involves amnesia and a rich girl finding love with a normie… what more could you want?
Mare of Easttown
Oh the things I would do for another season of this show! I don’t think the premise is overly unique for a TV show or book, to be honest, but the curmudgeonly lead detective vibe by Kate Winslet was SO well-done. I would love to find more shows like this one. I don’t read a lot of book series like this but I know they’re quite popular.
