103 Books Read
I don’t like finishing the year with a number ending in three (I prefer a 0 or 5) but whatever, let’s get over that and move on. As always, I’d like to share some final statistics for the year!
Books Read
Yet again I’ve had some success in keeping my combined romance/mystery/thriller section under 75% – this year I finished around 67% between those genres. I think I’d like to read a lot more fantasy next year – I’m just kind of feeling it. I’d also like to increase my literary fiction category.
As always, “mixed” format was my biggest category. This will continue to increase as time goes on because I’ve found myself mixing in the Spotify Audiobooks more and more. It’s just so easy! I was thinking I’d find a better way to track that next year but I’m too lazy. Maybe that’s for 2026…
I still need to prioritize reading books on my shelves and the ones I keep buying… but I really loved Libby and my Kindle this year, clearly!
This was a weird year for me, especially at the end – I read a ton of mid books in November/December. I feel like 4 stars is usually my most popular rating but I am a little alarmed that 3.5 is so close this year. Hopefully I can focus on reading some really good stuff for next year.
So yes generally speaking I can read 8 books a month with a few exceptions where I read a few more than that. I know that’s why 100 is a reasonable goal for me because I can, on average, read 8 books a month, then just read an additional 4 total books in other months whenever I’m compelled to.
Last year’s chart was a bit prettier because I just stayed on point and ahead of my goal the whole time, reading 115 books instead of 80. I knew I could do 100 this year and as you can see, pretty much was on target the whole year. Not a huge “challenge” but I did read a lot of short books and novellas (more on that below) to get me there…
I did manage to read a few long books since I read the CRESCENT CITY series to start the year, but obviously there are a lot of books under 200 pages on here. I still have my sweet spot in the 300 page range. I really hope to read longer books next year to actually progress on my TBR.
Very similar to other years in terms of Penguin Random House being my top publisher. Hachette still makes up a good portion as well. Usually I read more Macmillan books so that’s a little surprising! I am also not too pleased to see how large the Amazon portion is – this is because I read all of those novellas/short story collections this year. And finally, interesting to see so many Simon & Schuster! Not mad.
Clearly I read more Kindle Unlimited books this year, which is again not super surprising given what I noted above. I read a nice mix of books from other places too. Not upset about this graph!
This is a slightly more detailed version of the previous book which shows where I read certain books. As expected, the top location was “mixed” which means I read one book in multiple formats across multiple platforms.
This is basically the same breakdown as last year where I mostly read free books – review copies, library books, borrowed copies, etc. – instead of the books I spend my money on. This is both a good and bad thing, in my view.
Each year I seem to read more books by men, which I don’t like. I much prefer the girl power vibes of past years! I’m assuming it mostly has to do with more mysteries and less romance?
Very similar to past years. I really like an ensemble cast or books that go back and forth between the lead female and male main characters. When there’s a single protagonist or narrator, it’s girls all the way for me.
Again, as always, less and less YA books – kind of sad but not unexpected. A few more percentage points went tho the adult category in 2024 and expect that to continue from here.
I don’t think I did a great job here. Last year saw solid improvement and this year was about the same as that. I’m disappointed that there aren’t even more in the “limited” category.
Almost exactly the same as last year, which isn’t surprising. Even romance books are in series these days. I finished reading the TOG series last year so that was the reason for the increase, but this year it was a lot of novella “series.”
I made a lot of progress in series this year, with a lot of them in the “ongoing” and “complete” categories. I still started a decent amount but this accounts for the first book in a series rather than connecting it to the fact that I finished a lot that I started.
Acquisitions
This generally echoes what I spend my time reading. I’m also more likely to buy a mystery book rather than get it from the library, for example, because my mom likes to read them as well. I can hand the book to her first. I do keep buying fantasy and not really reading them.
This is a STARK difference from past years. I had more than 50% egalleys last year and now that’s less than a third! I bought a lot of hardcovers instead, mainly due to BOTM and just a lot of new release shopping and preorders. I’ll slowly acquire less audiobooks as well since I usually borrow them instead of buy.
Another big difference – more physical books than digital, even compared to last year where I was trending that way.
This mirrors the publishers read chart for the most part, which shows that I’m consistent lol.
I doubled the amount of BOTM books this year compared to last and just generally bought way more books. I preordered a lot too. I still am shocked at how few review copies I requested and received this year.
I was excited I had read more than I acquired and then I realized the label was incorrect lol. I definitely acquired more than I read, which is something I’d like to keep a closer eye on next year!
