TBB Asks: July Vacation Edition

I love when Grace does these posts so I decided to participate! I thought it was appropriate to post today since I am currently in the Hamptons for my friend’s bachelorette party. More on that later, I assume!

1. Will you go on a summer vacation this year?

Let’s see, I’m currently in the Hamptons for my friend’s bachelorette weekend, so that counts. Chris and I don’t actually have summer vacation plans as of right now? We may try to sneak in a long weekend somewhere in August. Our next trip is currently planned for my birthday in early September. We’re going to the Panthers’ home opener in Charlotte with my parents, since they’re playing my mom’s team!

2. Do nothing but relax or pack it all in vacation?

Chris and I tend to get antsy if we don’t plan a few things, but there’s definitely a balance. We usually travel places to see specific sights or do certain activities. When we went to California, we were busy nonstop, and it would have been nice to have an extra day or free afternoon at some point. I like to relax for part of the day and do something that takes up 50-75% of the rest of the day.

3. What month do you like to vacation?

We actually don’t do a lot of summer vacations, honestly. A lot of our trips are long weekends. In the winter, we hit ski mountains. In the fall and spring, we go somewhere a little warmer or plan based on certain events. A lot of our recent vacations have been based around weddings and conventions. Hilton Head Island 2016 was the most recent real vacation for us?

4. Cruise – YES or NO?

I’ve never been on one but I really want to! Chris has been on a couple, I believe, but he gets seasick in general. I think he’d be okay with it and usually his stomach settles in eventually. He’s not overly enthused with the idea of doing one but I really hope to book one within the next 3 years.

5. Favorite vacation tradition?

We try to visit Charlotte to see a Panthers game every other year. We missed the boat last year because we moved to Portland instead lol. We’ll go this September and hopefully again in 2020, and so on. When I was a kid, we would rent a house on Cape Cod for a week every year. I miss that house and beach so much! My parents (mom and stepdad) and I are attempting to plan a trip for the four of us next summer since I miss the Cape so much.

6. Most memorable vacation?

Hilton Head was definitely gorgeous and memorable. I wanted to move there right away. They have gorgeous beaches and SO much to do. We went with a friend we don’t talk with much anymore so it’s kind of unfortunate that the trip is a bit tainted now… Otherwise, my first trip to Charlotte to see the Panthers involved a lot of crying happy tears. Last month’s California trip was memorable because I saw a friend get married AND visited the west coast for the first time AND met two of my blogging BFFs finally!

7. Pack light or pack it all?

I have started to be SO much better about packing lately. We went to California for five days and Chris and I ONLY used a duffel bag as a carry-on and our two personal items. I was SO impressed with myself. It helps when you kind of know the weather 😉 My biggest packing hang-up (in terms of when I pack way too much) is when I’m going somewhere warm during the day and cold at night. How many jeans vs. shorts? How many sweatshirts or sweaters is logical? My biggest tip though, for light packing, is to wear outfits in the same color family so you don’t need as many pairs of shoes. I will wear all black or brown or blue/navy throughout a trip so I can pack all the same colored shoes and less pairs overall.

8. Hotel, condo or house?

I’m a big fan of hotels; I think they’re so fun! For longer trips it can definitely be nice to have some kind of house or condo to rent instead, so you don’t have to spend as much money on food. I guess my answer depends on the length of the trip and the type of hotel. We stayed over at a random hotel in MA early this year that had a full kitchen and living room. I loved the suite style and would have loved to stay longer!

9. Favorite thing(s) to eat on vacation?

Calorie counting usually goes out the window, so probably everything? I love to try new ice creams when I’m on vacation though; it seems like a must-do everywhere we go. One of my favorite things to do, restaurant-wise, is eat outside on a patio. I will always choose places with outdoor seating!

10. Warm or cold destinations?

I have to say both! I know this is probably an unpopular opinion but I’m a skiier; what can I say? We like to spread our vacation days throughout the year and enjoy multiple types of vacations. My ideal year of vacations will have a few days off and/or long weekends to ski in the winter months, followed by somewhere warm and beachy in the summertime, and end with a trip to Charlotte (for football) or even Vermont (somewhere with foliage) in the fall.

  1. Ooh, I hope you’re having fun in the Hamptons! I want to visit Cape Cod so badly– there’s seriously so much of New England that I haven’t explored. Learning to pack light is a game-changer! I’ve packed for two-week trips in nothing but my carry-on; it’s totally doable if you really plan out your outfits for each day. I agree with eating EVERYTHING on vacation!
