Top Ten Tuesdays #426: Reading Goals

Reading Goal Progress Before EOY

Top Ten Tuesdays were started by The Broke and the Bookish and are now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where we make lists of our top ten books (or something else!) based on that week’s prompt. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Book links bring you to Goodreads or my review.

I always write a post discussing my reading goals for the year so it’s fun to reflect back on that list now that we’re heading into the final quarter of the year! I also wrote recently about how I hope to finish up my reading challenges in the end of the year and certain books or series I hope to read.

2023 Goal Check-In
Stay on track or ahead of my Goodreads challenge

Knocked this one out of the park. I finished my Goodreads challenge of 80 books in August. I’ve had a renewed sense of energy for reading this year! It’s been lovely. It also takes a little pressure off for the final months of the year. I’m reading some bigger books, fantasy books, and others that I would usually put off because they’d take me too long to read.

Keep up Instagram stories about current and completed reads

I’ve also kept up with my Instagram reviews! I love sharing monthly TBR plans, wrap-ups, reviews, midpoint check-ins, and more. I’m very pleased with this.

Read 1-3 owned (physical) books per month

Okay I had to track this down. 1-3 books per month could be 9-27 (lol) total books by October. I’m not going to go month-by-month to figure this out, but my spreadsheet shows 24 books! This includes BOTM selections, books I’ve purchased, books I’ve preordered, and books that were already on my shelves. Because I’ve been doing a lot better at only buying books I’m really excited to read, I’ve definitely done a decent job of actually reading those books.

Try to balance reading and other hobbies better

I don’t know about this one. I know this goal was originally created because I was reading too much and not doing much else, then it swung in the opposite directions during pandemic years. I’ve definitely read a ton this year and have really enjoyed it… but I am missing out on my TV shows, new movies, etc. I think I’m feeling decent right now but between reading and books and watching booktube… I could definitely squeeze in other hobbies lol.

Read less than 75% contemporary and mystery/thrillers

I used to read over 50% contemporary books and wished for a more even breakdown between some of my favorite genres. I decided, since I’ve been reading a ton of mystery/thrillers lately, that my new goal would be to read less than 75% contemporary AND mystery/thriller books. I’m pleased that (as of now), I’m at 67.5%! I’m currently reading one fantasy book too so realistically that should go down too. I’m definitely enjoying more fantasy and paranormal books.

Intentionally read more diverse books instead of accidentally

I’ll be candid: I was definitely being intentional about this earlier in the year but then I got behind on my TBR. Over half of the books I’ve read this year have some level of diversity in them (between my Yes and Limited categories that I track). I know this has happened somewhat accidentally though. I think I need to participate in a Diverse Books challenge next year so I can truly be intentional.

Focus on getting my Netgalley ratio above 80%

I did ARC August to try to catch up on this. I’ve put focus around it and haven’t requested nearly as many books this year as usual, but I have a little ways to go before I consider myself in the clear for this one.

Finish a few book series

I made a series tracker and have some big ones (looking at you, THRONE OF GLASS) that were on my list for this year. I’m definitely feeling good about book series in general but it’s not like I ever feel super behind on this anyways? I don’t think this will be a big focus for me next year as long as I’m tracking series progress and being sort of intentional.

Post more consistently on the blog, beyond TTTs and wrap-ups

I’m feeling good about this for the most part. Some months don’t have much more than TTT, Bookmark Lit Bulletin, and reviews, but I’ve been writing a lot of themed TBR posts too. I don’t do any discussion posts but love writing lists of books I’m excited to read or talking about favorite tropes in books.
