I’m someone who lovesss a seasonal TBR and a reading challenge. When you combine the two for a great reading season – summertime – I’m definitely going to get on board. I’m joining two challenges and tracking them on Storygraph, so I thought I would share here and cover some TBR options based on what I hope to read this summer.
Book Clurb
Some gals I know in real life have an in-person Book Clurb and I think this is the second year of their summer reading challenge. I enjoyed it last time and hope to complete it this year!
- Read a book by a debut author: IF BOOKS COULD KILL is the main one that I know for sure is by a debut author and I’d like to read my review copy ASAP
- Read a book set during summer: There are a ton of books set in summer so just know that the vast majority of the books you see here will work for this prompt lol I added OUR PERFECT STORM specifically here for it
- Read a recommendation from a friend: I’ve had THE NAME GAME on my physical TBR for a few months now and I saw a bookstagram friend recommend it for summer reading this year
- Read a book without reading the synopsis: I could do DOLLY ALL THE TIME for this one because while I definitely read the synopsis a long time ago, I randomly started the audiobook this week without re-reading it… which is an uncommon practice for me
- Read a book that’s been sitting on your shelf: Another good one for quite a few of these books – I think I’ll put ADRIFT here because I’m really surprised it’s been sitting most of the year!
- Read a book about a vacation: SANDWICH has been on my TBR for a while and I hope to give it a go this summer. I believe it takes place at a family’s annual trip to Cape Cod
- Read a book that is part of a series: BIG LITTLE TRUTHS comes out this year and it’s a sequel to BIG LITTLE LIES, so I think that may just work
- Read a book published this year: Tons of options for this since I’m unfortunately a big reader of new releases. I’ll add THE SOMEDAY GARDEN as visual representation for it
- Read a book from the library: I use DOLLY ALL THE TIME for this in the challenge below for this same prompt but I do think it fits better in the “didn’t read synopsis” one. I have a feeling that THE SECRETS WE HIDE may be a library selection for me since I don’t own the first book?
- Read a book with a primarily blue or water-themed cover: THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND works well for this prompt
- Read a book under 250 pages: EMMA M. LION will be featured for both challenges involving this amount of pages lol
- Read a book published in 2023: As I said, I’ve got a ton of new releases on the TBR this year… I can’t promise I’ll get to this one but I browsed my shelves and pulled out ALL THE DANGEROUS THINGS since I still can’t believe I haven’t read this yet lol
Read It & Eat It
I was browsing Storygraph for challenges and saw this fun one based on the Pizza Hut reading challenges. It has some basic prompts to read for the summer and I gave the host a follow as well.
- A book set in a place you want to travel: THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND is set on Nantucket and I’d love to go there someday
- A library book: I’m currently reading DOLLY ALL THE TIME out from my library!
- A book released in 2026: All of these books except one can fall into this category
- A book under 250 pages: I plan to continue the EMMA M. LION series this summer and the next volume (#6) is just barely under the page limit but it counts!
- A book whose cover you love: I love the covers for ONE PERFECT STORM and THE SOMEDAY GARDEN so we’ll see which makes sense based on what else I read
- A book in a genre you don’t typically read: A KILLER KIND OF ROMANCE may work here because while it is a romance, there’s a crime/mystery element to it, and that’s rare for me?
- A book set in summer: DOLLY ALL THE TIME and ONE PERFECT STORM fit this one, as well as many others!
- A book by an author you’ve never read before: SANDWICH could fit a few of these (places to travel, set in summer) but I think it makes sense here since I’ve never read Newman before
- Wild card – whatever you want: I’ll probably use this spot for one of the thriller books on my TBR like THE SEASON OF SINKING
