top 10 tues watercolorFREEBIE: Books I Needed to Buy ASAP and Haven’t Read Yet

Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, where we make lists of our top ten books based on that week’s prompt… and then we stalk other people’s answers to add a million books to our TBR. The topics are provided ahead of time and can be found here. Links go to Goodreads or my review.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who have this issue on a regular basis. SO MANY NEW RELEASES, SO LITTLE TIME. With some books, I just absolutely need to buy them immediately… but don’t read them for months or years. I rush to the store to buy it on release day and waited foreeeever for it to be in my grubby little hands, but then it gathers dust on the shelf.

Today’s freebie TTT explores some of the books I had to buy right away OR ELSE that I still need to read. (Book title links bring you to Goodreads)

THE BOOK: Even in Paradise by Chelsey Philpot
WHY I NEEDED IT: First of all, that cover is gorgeous and intriguing. Second, the blurb sounds so interesting and I saw a lot of positive reviews for it. I was determined to read this right away because it just seemed like a book that would become a new favorite.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: Because I’m a dummy? I don’t know. That seems like the only reasonable answer. To be completely honest, I think I’ve built myself up a biiiit too much. I hyped it for myself and just view it as this perfect book even though I haven’t even read it. I’m afraid, okay?

THE BOOK: How to Love by Katie Cotugno
WHY I NEEDED IT: I saw this cover redesign and thought I NEED THIS NOW. The flowers in the background are so damn Lauren that I couldn’t resist. I also already had the Kindle version too. I’m stupid and don’t care. I saw one copy at B&N that was slightly damaged and I almost bought it just because I didn’t want to wait. (Don’t worry, I just ordered it online to ensure a nice copy…)
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I actually loved 99 Days and really wanted to try her other book… Although, books about pregnancy are just not my cup of tea. I don’t really know this for sure because I haven’t read any yet, but it’s just a feeling I have about them. That’s the main reason I’m not sure I want to read this one right away. I know I will eventually.

THE BOOK: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
WHY I NEEDED IT: I don’t know why but I decided to make it an endless quest to find this book at B&N. I thought the cover and concept sounded cool, and for some reason I decided I needed to buy it. I never was able to find it in the store and ended up just ordering it online. Some labels say middle grade and some say YA, so I’m not sure what to expect.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I don’t really know. I’m a mood reader so that’s the biggest reason. I don’t know why I was so desperate to own it, but now that I do I feel satisfied with that and don’t seem to care about actually reading it.

THE BOOK: We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach
WHY I NEEDED IT: I saw a review for this one and decided to preorder it. I haven’t read any books with the the-world-is-ending-tonight category. I wanted to read Tumble & Fall but the awful reviews steered me away from it. This one seemed awesome and so I immediately preordered it, intending to read it right away. I also LOVE the cover.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: This is another one where I’m not entirely sure. Maybe it’s the hype I created for myself is deterring me for now. I hope it’s good because I HATE buying books and not liking them. (Duh.)

THE BOOK: The Wrong Side of Right by Jenn Marie Thorne
WHY I NEEDED IT: I have to be vain and say THE COVER, which should come as a surprise to exactly zero readers of my blogs. It has all of my favorite cover things: watercolor, pink, handwritten typography, and even a little heart. Plus, my buddy Cristina’s glowing review definitely encouraged me a bit too 😉
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I DON’T KNOWWWW. I’m slightly hesitant because of the politics aspect, especially when the girl’s father falls on the conservative side. Like religion, this isn’t generally a topic I get excited about in books.

THE BOOK: Rooms by Lauren Oliver
WHY I NEEDED IT: I was planning on attending a signing in Connecticut when this book came out, but I didn’t end up making it down there. The place was an hour and a half away from me and I would have had to commute during rush hour. Anyways, I just decided not to go. I bought the book ahead of time so I could get it signed.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: (1) I didn’t really read adult books as much when I bought it, (2) I want to wait until it’s closer to Halloween since it involves ghosts, and (3) I’M A MOOD READER, DAMMIT.

THE BOOK: The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows
WHY I NEEDED IT: Yet again, another preorder that’s been sitting around. I don’t know why I preordered it because I knew I wasn’t going to read it right away. Lots of people looooved this book so I just went with it.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I haven’t felt compelled to read this one at all for some reason. Maybe I should have gone with my gut instinct and not bothered ordering it?

THE BOOK: It’s Not Me It’s You by Mhairi McFarlane
WHY I NEEDED IT: I blame Hannah for all of my adult fiction books I’ve recently bought. I read her VERY brief summary about why she liked this one on her blog recently, and decided to be a loser and buy it right away. The kicker? It’s only released in the UK so far so I had to track it down on the Book Depository and buy it that way.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: To be fair, this one arrived at my apartment just last week. I’ve had a lot of reading commitments over the past week so I should probably cut myself some slack. The reason this one is on here is because you’d think if I went through all the trouble of ordering a book (that isn’t even released in this country yet) that I would actually read it ASAP.

THE BOOK: Girl Before A Mirror by Liza Palmer
WHY I NEEDED IT: I was absolutely blown away by Nowhere But Home, which I read right around the time that everyone was obsessing over GBAM, so I obviously decided to buy this one right away. I love the cover and have heard nothing but fabulous things about this book.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I have to say, I’m a bit nervous! I’m almost positive that I’ll love this one just as much as the former Liza Palmer book I read, but I’m afraid that it’s been too hyped for me – both from others and from myself. I also keep saying I want to save it for a time where I want to be completely blown away by a book. Maybe if I read a few stinkers in a row I’ll sit down with this one, so I know I’ll be impressed…

THE BOOK: My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga
WHY I NEEDED IT: I was super excited for this one when I saw the pre-release buzz. I’m also obsessed with the cover, obviously.
WHY I HAVEN’T READ YET: I’ve read a few so-so reviews on this one since purchasing it, so I’ve been hesitant. Overall it has solid reviews and ratings on Goodreads, but there is a pretty big issue I’ve heard. This may be a spoiler? so proceed if you want – Many people see part of this book as problematic because it gives the message that love or having a boyfriend can fix any problem, especially one as serious as depression.

  1. I really want to read We All Looked Up as well (also because of awesome reviews), but I am probably your exact opposite. I was unsure, so I am waiting for my library to order it. That way I don’t have to buy it! 🙂 I love seeing how creative everyone has gotten with this freebie!

  2. I loved EVEN IN PARADISE. It reminded me a lot of The Great Gatsby and also Lauren Oliver’s writing. I also looooove HOW TO LOVE. The writing in that is soooo good. Even if you don’t love the pregnancy storyline, it is really about a girl trying to separate herself from a destructive guy and how people mess up and love and how at 16 you think a guy can be the world to you. Ugh, the writing in that is spectacular! I hope you get to read it soon.

  3. Oh this is a fantastic topic idea for this week! I definitely have some recent purchases that I have NO IDEA when I’m going to have time to read >.> Although I too really want to read This Side of Paradise, I’m thinking possibly a June or August book buddies read?

  4. I’ve actually only read Fairyland (title is so long haha) and I did like it! I want to say it’s a bit middle grade-ish, and not YA. But it is very magical and the writing style is very lyrical. Sadly I haven’t read most of the other books on your list, but I want to someday!

  5. I think this happened to me with the last book of your list, it looked pretty but then some bloggers weren’t all that happy with the book andddd what can I say? I listen to what other people say, sigh. I didn’t buy it, thankfully! Nice post! 🙂

  6. Oh my goodness, I could have written this post AND used half the same books! We All Looked Up (pre order that I am STILL dying to read, but no time), Rooms, My Heart and Other Black Holes, The Wrong Side of Right… And the worst part? Now you have me on the search for Even in Paradise and How to Love! Enabler 😉

  7. I borrowed The Orphan Queen from the library the other day, I hope it’s awesome 🙂 My heart & Other Black holes wasn’t for me although the characters were intriguing – great picks!
