If you remember my 101 in 1001 list, I had a few book and movie-related goals. One of them was to get 15 book and movie recommendations from friends, then read/watch them all. It seems like an easy enough task to complete in order to get me out of my comfort zone and see what some of my favorite people would recommend. Here’s what I shared in my post:
Ask 15 friends to suggest one book and movie; read and watch them all | I’ve seen this goal on the project’s website in a different flavor, but I brought it down to 15 people and wanted to also do movies. I know I can head right into the blogosphere for these recommendations ?
I know that there are some friends I’ll be targeting directly for recommendations, but there’s a huge chance that people suggest books I’ve already read or movies I’ve already seen. I don’t want to say “nope I’ve read it” or “sorry I’ve seen it” to every person I ask, so I figured I would just collect as many recommendations as possible and pick out 15. I’ll make it easier on myself and allow picking one book from someone and not their movie, if I’ve already seen it, and vise versa. The recs don’t have to all come from the same person for both. (So ignore the phrasing in the initial goal, okay?)
If you could recommend ONE BOOK and ONE MOVIE to me (or your go-to recommendation for everyone), what would they be?
Here are some things about my ~general preferences~ that you can either (A) take into consideration to be sure I’ll like it or (B) purposely avoid because you should push me out of my comfort zone!

I recommend to you:
Friday Brown by Vicki Wakefield and Stand By Me.
Great challenge, have fun with it!
Thanks so much! 🙂
Have you heard of Heather Hepler? She’s written a few fluffy YA chick lit type books and I just love them. Start with The Cupcake Queen because it’s also about desserts!
Awesome!
I don’t have any you haven’t seen/read! Obviously #1 movie is Empire Records and #1 book is HP. My favorite hilariously bad movies are Sharknado and anything starring Nicolas Cage. But I hope you get all your recommendations!
Oh I actually haven’t seen Sharknado and I do need a movie rec from someone (since one person just gave me a book) — so thank you!!
PS I LOVE bad movies, so this is a great recommendation anyways 😉
I second the bad Nicolas Cage movies! I recently watched one on Netflix called Next and it was pretty ridiculous acting. The plot had such potential but… no. Weirdly enough, when I was in high school, the class who was graduating did a senior prank and they put pictures of Nicolas Cage EVERYWHERE (you know, because he seems to always pop up in the most random genres). As for a book, I’d recommend The Reflections of Queen Snow White by David Meredith. It’s a little different than what you normally read (it’s a sort of romance/retelling type story) but I think you might enjoy it 🙂 Good luck with this challenge, Lauren!
Laura @BlueEyeBooks
I agree with Sharknado and anything staring Nicolas Cage. lol 🙂
LOL
If you like TJR, I would recommend Emily Giffin. She writes chick-lit, but they’re not really fluffy. They have more substance, like TJR.
And for movies, if you haven’t seen the Goosebumps movie with Jack Black yet, I would highly recommend it! It’s so funny, and I love the way it incorporates all the RL Stine Goosebumps books.
Thank you, these are great recommendations!!
This is so hard because you read so much! I would recommend The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1) – it’ll give you total Harry Potter vibes or The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and for movies… I feel like you’ve already seen all of my favorites (Star Wars, LoTR, Marvel, etc)!
Do not hate me but I fell asleep through LOTR back in the day!! My goal is to absolutely watch those in general — that’s going on my list here too! <3
Book – Speak: The Graphic Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson (very powerful adaptation)
Movie – I think you have seen it already, but I always recommend Twister, especially in the spring. If you have, what about John Wick?
Good luck with your challenge. This is such a good idea!
Thank you 😀 Love these recs! I have seen Twister — love that movie! Adding John Wick and Speak to my list <3
Contemporary books are MY JAM. It looks like we have some similar tastes, too. Some recommendations:
– Graffiti Moon and/or Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley
– Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett
– Prince in Disguise by Stephanie Kate Strohm
– Little Black Dresses, Little White Lies by Laura Stampler
– We Own the Night by Ashley Poston
– Anything by Katie McGarry
– Saving June and/or Speechless by Hannah Harrington
– Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins (not contemporary, but still fun)
Sorry that’s a lot haha I just hope there’s a few things in there you haven’t read yet! I love talking about less popular books or backlist titles that people might have missed!!
Yay thank you so much!!
For a book rec – I think you’ll like Liane Moriarty – any book written by her. For movie – I’m going old school with your rec. – The Wedding Singer, Bad Santa (or Badder Santa).
Oooh thank you! I actually enjoy Liane Moriarty quite a bit but there are some by her I haven’t read yet, so I can add those. I’ve seen The Wedding Singer (LOVE) but Bad Santa needs to be watched this Christmas! <3
